Hi cyberP,

Just got back from the pub so typing is a bit tricky - dvd movies didn't try but Soundblaster demo disc was a complete disaster - it couldn't be read in windoze or linux. Funnily enough I successfully respawned with the image CD in the lower drive but rother than that reading was a hit and miss affair. Impression was that it was more stable under linux but 85% functionality is simply not good enough on a new machine eh?

Half price cocktails at the local after work party have left me virtually illiterate. Time to fall asleep on the couch in front of "LOTR extended edition"

Inebriatedly yours

Rich

PS "Inebriatedly" - I apologise in advance for my bastardisation of the King's English. I am so ashamed but 1.5 liter of Zombie will turn even T.S. Elliot into Dr Seuss !

@yang We ended up doing rounds of tequila slammers with the waitress. My legs were on autopilot as I staggered home from the train station...

DVD Break...

I got the system Back................. CyberP has finally snapped. IT STILL IS BROKE. it looks like they ignored all of the notes that service tech made the day we sent it back ! all it looks like they did was replace the optical drive and put it back in the box. they did not do the respawn... They must have not tested anything since my chip reader was turned off after a bios update the tech had me do before we sent it. they got rid of my orginial box (very very annoying). and they had my computer for a full month.......... I got no shipping notification.......... I lost time from work waiting for this thing. I lost more time from work checking it out today........ I am mad ........ I never thought I'd see them do this...... They ignored a nice note I put in the box that mentioned is was not the drive but the bottom bay. IT CLEARLY WAS NOT THE DRIVE ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE TECH OR SHE WOULD HAVE SENT ME A REPLACEMENT.

Our worst fears realized - the most patient customer AW has, and you get stiffed...you must PM/private email to AlienRichard NOW. I know they are busy and there is a backlog on the m7700s - but this just isn't acceptable. Alienware - PLEASE make things right for CyberP !!!!

I hope I'm not out of line here, but I would not send the system back right now. I'd test it out for 2-4 weeks to make sure everything else is working...talk this over with AW before you do anything.

I am so sorry cyberP!!!
i had high hopes.
what options now??

Hulk "smash"

OK, CyberP HULK SMASH attitude has been pushed down for now. I PM'd AWRichard. I also placed rant on aw site while hulking out. Oh well, we all have our "Hulk" sides..... I just tried working with the Audio DJ.... (I wish clevo did not put that crap there but it's there so I thought I'd try it) somewhere in the back of my mind some firmware of some drives collide with that heckish device. I tried to use the dj and it only works while in windows media player and nowhere else(vol work all places but not drive control )...... hmmmmm..... I also remember from somewhere that some dis-abling the dj made a drive work again on someone elses m7700.... I just don't know how to do that ..... I wonder..... I'll look it up then check with AW.

my guess it might be disrupting the primary drives (if the bott drive is primary) firmware......

That is really gutting CyperP. Sorry to hear it - not only because you are back at square one but also because I am seriously nervous about sending my machine off now. The note I am sending in with the system has included some of the info you have given i.e. replacing the drive is a complete waste of time; is it linked to the Audio DJ etc etc.

Please keep us posted on your progress. I shall do likewise. If there are 2 of us with this problem, there will be more so maybe we should bump any solution found to a new thread...

I agree once a solution(s) is/are found other threads will insue......... The more I think about it the more to me it looks like this audio dj thing.

BIOS clears the cdrom drive and correctly ID's it.

POST test clears drive / controller. normally when controllers go you get other problems HD other drives etc.

Drive's own internal test seem to pass.

Windows also shows nothing wrong. In fact I get proof that it "can" read.

It feels like something is disrupting the drive's normal activity. (gut says software/firmware). I know it's a gut feeling but I have touched and felt and heard problems before... I trust my instincts they rarely let me down.

PS: yea gut feeling...... hmmm. Musta been something I ate (I think I might need gut v 2.0 to get it right next time)

At lunch I had a chance to run 1 test. I was able to get the DJ to power on while the computer was off. I don't know if the drive will read the audio but it did for windows media player last night so I am hopeful that it will here too. I still get the gut feeling the dj is getting in the way of the drive.

(Fingers crossed) like all of our friends here. I even put a note into the box, explaining to pay attention to the drive bay more than the drive. Like my wife said to me last night "it's only a machine" (by the way I gave her a funny look at that then put in the 05 benchmark and showed her the machine). She is right of course but wow what a machine !!!!!

Well, I have been PM'd by Alienware-Steve hopefully he will find a "painless" solution to my drive problems and get me my box back (I miss my crisp black box !!!!). I don't want another month of waiting......... we'll see how things go, right about now I'd rather have my DJ not work and have my CD operational. who needs a 6K CD player (nobody really needs that).

Well, I have been in contact with AlienSteve and we will see how they help me with this most trying of times.
