Maximum Memory on El Cheapo Notebook

I have ordered an el cheapo notebook for my wife to use around the house and when she travels. The reason that I went for this notebook is that she needed a 12.1" notebook and our budget was around $500. On eBay, most of the stuff in this price range was older technology. So we went with a..... Tatung notebook. I had never heard of them before, but hey, it was half the price of anything else with the same features.

On the Kingston website this notebook is listed as having a max memory of 1GB even though it has 2 sockets.

http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/conf...submit1=Search

However, the board on this notebook uses the 855GME chipset which is capable of 2GB of RAM. It has 2 sockets available for RAM modules.

Also of note, is the fact that the 14.1" Tatung says right in it's specs that it can only be upgraded to 1GB RAM.

Is it possible that Kingston is wrong on this? Is the memory limit in the BIOS itself?

Here are the specs:

I have received the laptop, and it is a sweet little thang for the price. The keyboard feels cheap but that's ok.

It says in the Owner's Manual that the max RAM is 1GB.

It uses AMI PnP BIOS, I wonder if another BIOS could be used that would up the limit to 2GB...

Just out of curiosity, where did you buy that laptop from? Generally speaking, the max memory is determined by chipset. A lot of times, memory quotes were made by the manufacturer at the time of available memory modules. Example, a while back a lot of the Averatec line was quoted as not supporting 1G sticks (because at the time of testing and QA, 1gig sticks weren't available), but they did in fact support it. But Tatung has been around for a very very long time. Their presence is not well known in the US, most of the stuff they used to sell were servers, workstations, and a couple of cheap PC models used in some corps. IIRC, they also sold sparc clones at one time or another.

From Walmart.com for $699: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3380763

Watched a bit of Alexander on the DVD player and the screen is EXCELLENT. I am surprised at this little thing. Very responsive even with only 256MB of RAM installed. Not sluggish in the least. It also has a multimedia mode so you can watch DVDs or listen to CDs without booting windows.

As well as this thing performs now I might just throw in two 512MB sticks. It really isn't the least bit slow.

It would be nice though if it took 1GB modules.
