Turning On The E1705

I am using my new Dell E1705 bad ass computer as my main desktop unit attached to a dell 24" monitor. Well my Lid is closed...how do I turn the computer on? Is there any other way besides opening the lid and hitting the power button? Maybe a stupid question, but I thought I would ask.

Damn this thing is silent.

You'll get much less battery life by using an USB device. See the thread in the forum for more information.

dont think having it hooked to an external monitor and waking on usb means itll be unplugged (:

battery life doesnt matter when its on ac (:

Actually that it not completely true and not completely relevant.

The I9400 / E1705 has USB devices built in, so even without connecting anything you will lose battery life. And the amout of loss is questionable as the tests described in the article referenced in the other thread don''t show a lot of increase after the issue was fixed.

All of this is not relevant as the BIOS states that wake up on USB doesn't work on battery power.

Just curious, did you try holding down the Play button on the front of the unit? I know on my i9300 that worked, even though it does launch the DMX you can exit out of that...

I just got my 9300 a couple months ago. First, no MIC, now no real way to turn the thing on with the lid closed. Did Dell fall asleep while designing this thing?

Thanks for all the replies, I will try the "hold play" idea. Hope it works. Still love it though.

That only works with the lid open.

BTW the USB problem is with USB2.0 Devices so if you have any USB 1.1/1.0 you can do it, but if it's pluged you won't loose any power. Just my 2 cents

The i9400 / E1705 has USB 2.0 devices built in and therefore always connected or 'plugged in'.

Ok, so I guess there is no way. hmm Is there a docking station somewhere for these comps?

Well, if you're running MCE, and are on outlet-power, you could use the power-up-on-USB option. My remarks on USB and the power issue are only related to the power issue, so on outlet-power that's not a problem.

Otherwise you could tell the BIOS to auto-power-up at a set time every day, but that might not be flexible enough.
