BF2 Idiot - Rant + Help!

rant/ So I was playing BF2 today, and I asked how to force 1920x1200 res. I tried the:

'+szy 1920 +szx 1200'

The menu is the correct resolution but when the game starts, it reverts back to 1600x1200, so I use 4xAA, look ok, but not correct.

Anywho... this guys like, "What monitor do you have, I'll tell you how."
I replied, "Its a laptop"
In turn, "There's no laptop out there that can play BF2 at that resolution."

So it begins...

According to his 'knowledge' BF2 can only support up to 1280x960. I've already explained the fact I am using 1600x1200. Once he understood that BF2 is capable of this resolution (probably can't see it because he has some crappy LCD) he then proceeded to tell me that my computer is running the game poorly.

This was the best part. The game runs solid. MAX everything. Every setting under video options, MAXED. He wouldn't believe me that it was running fine.

The sad part was, he said, unprovoked, "The best laptop video card out there is the 7800GTX Go and it totally sucks. I have a X850XT 256MB and it kicks the crap out of it. Tell me your video card. Don't tell me the rest, it doesnt make a difference in performance."

I tell him.

"That must suck on the 7800 Go. Probably runs like crap."

Some guy speaks, "WTF are you talking about? The rest of the computer has everything to do with BF2."

He replies, "I built my own computer and its sick."

"What is it?"

"AMD A64 3700+ 1GB DDR400 dual channel X850XT 256MB"

I told him "I built my own desktop computer too. Its not that big of a deal."

Some other guy. "Ya dude, its not hard."

I told him my specs. Then said, "You know, most retail HP desktops come with the 3700+. To think that a mid range processor, that's about, I dont know, more than a year old, is better than a high end processor than was just released last month is ridiculous. BF2 is one of the biggest system hogs out there. 2GB minimum for absolute smooth playability on the highest settings and to think that your 'kick-ass' dated system is killing the game, and mine is struggling, you have got to be an idiot." /endrant

Well, in the end I feel that I've made a difference. Instead of killing and helping to better my team, I fought with some loser the whole round.

help/ So, like a wrote before, Anyone know how to force 1920x1200. The menu works fine but as soon as I get into the game it goes back to 1600x1200. Anyone out there got it to work properly?

Hello.

Sounds like you are talking to a fool.

Make a shortcut to the exe file and put it on your desktop.

Right click the new shorcut and select properties.

The target line will read:

X: . . . \Battlefield2\bf2.exe"

Make it:

X: . . . \Battlefield2\bf2.exe" +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200

Yes, that's outside the quotes.

The "x" ordinate is measured across the horizontal span . . . so what you wrote above is flipped. That's assuming you didn't typo.

This works great for me on many displays. I have not tried it on my i9400 though. I get it tomorrow and we'll see then.

I have ran:
1440 x 900 on a I9200
1680 x 1050 on a 2405fpw
1920 x 1200 on a 2405
1920 x 1080 on a 60" sony sxrd

All ran fine. I "belive" that you will only generate this res on the ACTUAL dx 3d stuff. The menu's and 2d overlays are some base res i "think".

My BF2 menu's look like crap. I assure you though, my BF2 is running at the res I set.

Hope this helps. I doubt very seriously there is any funny business with the uxga screen that will not allow this.

Addendum:
IF this doesn't work for you . . . I have another suggestion. The video card can obviously do lots of resolutions. There are the funny rules like division by 8 and so fourth, but you can run alot of resolutions - many more than what's listed in windows.

If one is NOT listed, you need to add it in the nvidia panels. A resolution consists of the two numbers (szx & szy) AND the refresh. There is a command line option to specify frame rate in bf2. Make sure the default matches the refresh rate in the nvidia control panel that is listed for the 1920 x 1200 resolution. I had a few issues with that once when playing with one of those 24" sony crt's.

Hey thanks. I did that and checked the resolution. Turns out I was running it at 1920x1200 anyways! With 4xAA and its running sick!

Man this laptop is sick. The HUD is still stretched though, but the 3d part is awesome.

(Yes, I did make a typo)

Cool.

I"m eagerly awaiting mine.

What kind of framerate were you getting?

I probably won't use AA/AF. As the resolution increases those aren't AS important. And for a fps . .. framerate is MUCH more important to me.

I would like to run at native res however.

You get with these setting written before, a smaller FOV (Field of View), because we have a 16:10 LCD and BF2 still thinks you have a 4 x 3 aspect ratio. The rest will be cut off and blurred!
Compare it with screenshots, you will see it.

For better widescreen FOV 16:10 you need also to make changes in the (install) directory of bf2 /EA GAMES/Battlefield 2/mods/bf2/Settings/VideoDefault.Con
cvar of fov to : 1.15

renderer.fieldOfView 1.15

and start then with the command line:
... +widescreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200

And before that delete the ...mods/bf2/cache/*. Important!

And it should be a very nice and sharp 16:10 screen, now.

Good for reading!
