HAD A 9300 BOUGHT A E1705 FOR COMPANY AND NEVER OCCURED TO ME IT HAS AN DIFFERENT "mini-" slot...

Can I buy a slot and install it? Dell is hopeless on their tech support...

ewwwwww that is gonna hurt. I never even thought of "replacing" the expresscard slot with the older PCMCIA slot. I will do some checkin' too for ya!

Ah, so this slot on the side which looks exactly like a PCMCIA slot is actually an expresscard slot?

What are you planning on using the slot for? What PCMCIA cards do you already have?

Yip no PCMCIA slot .. and you can't just change the slot out. PCMCIA is different for Express card (PCI-E based) the technology is different. There is current only a couple of usb to PCMCIA adapter and they don't fully support all PCMCIA card..

Hey sorry bout the all caps...

We use Verizon EVDO cards for internet in the company, we can use a cell phone via bluetooth or USB but dont get the same throughput or reliability in my experience so have stuck with the plug-in cards

Well I guess I will see what I can do to return the computer...

If anyone sees any other solutions please let me know...

ohh.. does the usb-pcmia converter work you think with the Verizon EVDO cards? I assume I would loose troughput speeds??

THX for the quick responses!!

I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like you need a PCMCIA slot for a NIC, USB, FireWire, etc. It already has all of those. The only inconvenience is not being able to use the PCMCIA sound card, so you have to go with a USB sound card if you want to use surround speakers. Big deal. USB sound cards have a ton more features anyway.

Exactly what is the point of the express card "upgrade". Its not like the pcmcia slot is widely used (the trend is to integrate all critical functions into the laptop) by anything other than niche specialty cards. For example, probably less than 5% of laptop users would purchase an Audigy2 sound card. Most will find built in sound good enough.

PCMCIA card vendors have a small market anyway, and forcing most of them to start low volume production to a new standard and while still having to support the old pcmica standard will simply result in many of them simply dropping out of the market.

I’m not sure if this is relevant to this discussion, but I was reading an article on routers and one review suggested that a particular router worked better when paired with the company’s matching PC card. I don’t have the article at work, but I can get it later if needed.

Best,

actually this is not a 802.11nic card but a verizon high speed cell card for internet...itmay be small percentage of overall user...but still sucks they dropped it and didn't list it on the order page....

they want 15% return fee plus shipping

Just like anything else as technology gets better it gets incorporated into the new PCs/Laptops. ExpressCard is a Superior technology with a much greater transfer rate etc. This is why they have stopped shipping the PCMCIA slots and have upgraded to ExpressCard. There will soon be ExpressCards for sound, you may just have to wait a little while.

Here is what they look like if you don't know:

This change has been coming for some time. www.expresscard.org

Personally, I want to get this TV tuner card:

Let's see PCMCIA do that!

I want the tuner too but I don't want to see the price tag on that sucker!

Good news for some of you out there, like myself, I went from an i9300 and my verizon broadband card to the stupid Express card slot, in april there is to be a release of an adapter model U132 from Elan Digital Systems.

http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/adapter/u132.php

Its a USB2.0 to PCMCIA 32bit slot reader that should work for most CDMA/EVDO modems, for my verizon V620 is supported so I am happy this is coming out.

No pricing really yet, probably less than $200 for it... A pain in the ass but this technology has come out to fast and too premature, they should have waited for more developement from PC card makers first. But hey cutting edge tends to do this right...

its all good.
