Satellite M55-S135 intermittent whitescreen

This morning, my monitor started fading to white, initially when the CPU was under high load, but within an hour or so (I had rebooted every time this occurred) it was happening virtually right on startup. I later found that moving the monitor as soon as it started to fade would instantly fix the problem; it is still fading once in a while (twice in the past hour and a half), but adjusting the position of the monitor slightly is, as of now, correcting the problem instantly. I suspect a cable or connector problem.

Since I am a student and have a major exam Friday, I'd rather not bring my computer into the shop before then. Does anyone have any experience self-repairing these things? What are the chances of a part needing replacement? And is this a more urgent issue than I think it is?

Sounds like there could be someting wrong with the connection of the lcd to the motherboard (could be a loose conection or worst case scenario something with the graphics card). Since this is a new model, I'm sure you still have warranty left on it so I'd recomend bringing it to a authorized repair facility and having them straighten it out.

Well... it's now going white on boot, and does not correct at all. The tech support line is trying to tell me I need to get the monitor replaced, and that it will take a week...

I think the cable connector is not seated properly on the back of the LCD screen. I've seen the same problem before and reseating the cable helped to fix it. If your laptop is still under warranty, I would definitely take it to a repair center.
