Really? That would just be exceptionally cool. Samsung (they and Toshiba are very near the same thing aren't they? they have a TON of products that are built the exact same way) is probably my favorite electronics company. I've never had a bad product from them, ever.

and no one mentions Lenovo?

I've heard of Lenovo. Most people have heard of Lenovo. So, no, we didn't. If you need info on them, I'm pretty sure www.ibm.com can do it.

SuperTalent seems to be used (or misused) often by retailers as a catch-all label for generic systems, which I find are often based on ECS machines.

All of the Supertalent systems I looked at on www.e-wiz.com were based on MSI or Asus systems. I haven't seen any ECS ones yet.

Added sabio to the list. It seems they might be a cheap way to get a Quanta barebones, but the selection I've found so far is pretty weak.

A ... 'christian' it seems source for a few Compal, Asus, Quanta, Sager, and maybe some others. A cool thing they do is post 3dmark 05 scores, as well as the GPU clock they used to get that score. Very helpful, even if you aren't going to buy from them, you can check the site to easily compare graphics speeds. They're prices seem more than reasonable, $1792 for a Sager 5720 with 7800GTX even though the other components are baseline.

And the last one for the evening. http://www.mindconnection.com/librar...keslaptops.htm

Says some stuff like:
For example:

An ODM named Clevo makes the Sager NP5670 and the Alienware Area 51-M, the Voodoo MClass M550, the Hypersonic Sonic Aviator, and they are all the same computer. Clevo also makes the Sager NP8882 and NP8887 and the Voodoo MClass M600 and they are also the same computer. Of course, the Sager models have a much sweeter price tag!
An ODM named Compal (not to be confused with Compaq) makes some of the the DELL, Hewlett Packard and Compaq line of laptops--plus some others.
Quanta makes many of the Dell Latitude, IBM, and Sony Vaio laptops.
GVC makes the Micron Transport Treck and Treck 2.
Inventec makes many of the Compaq brands.
Clevo and Kapok make certain models of the Sager Computer. Clevo and Kapok are different divisions of the same company and are among the largest and best in the world.
Other ODM names are Mitech, Kapok, Clevo, FIC, Twinhead, and Uniwil--just to name a few.
None of that is real earth-breaking news, most has been covered already, but if it comes from more than one person just makes it a little more trustworthy. Also, my bad on the powernotebooks.com link, someone else already posted that one, so props to them, not to me (even though THEY didn't link it, and I did)

I think Sabio is a distributor for Quanta; they were definitely some middle part of the chain between Quanta manufacturing my KN1 and ISTNC putting in the final components, as my system came with "SD" nameplates with their logo. I think Powernotebooks also gets their Quantas from them; it seems resellers go through Sabio rather than dealing with Quanta directly.

So now I'm getting more curious to see what ODM makes which name-branded laptops. So far, I have found:
Dell Inspiron = Compal
Dell Latitude = Quanta
Compaq Armada and Prosignia (never heard of it) = Inventec
Compaq Presario = Arima
Above info was written in 2003, so might not be thoroughly accurate anymore.
I hear that the Panasonic notebooks are made by Quanta
IBM used to buy from Arima and Quanta, but now have Lenovo and I'm not sure what they do, haven't looked

So, from the articles I'm finding, Compal and Quanta seem to make most of the chassis for big-name companies. Vaio seems to make their own stuff, Toshiba makes one or two models themselves, and that's what I've got for now. Also added a website for Quanta, after tons of searching.

FIC and ECS were the main odms for Winbook

Don't know if anyone cares, but thought I'd add a bit and try to resurrect this thread.
Looking on nvidia's website of geforce-supplied notebook makers gave me some more that I didn't know existed.
Samsung (which is cool to me because they're a favorite brand of mine) although not available in US has a small selection http://www.samsung.com/Products/Notebook/index.htm
LG has a selection as well http://www.lge.com/products/category...notebook.jhtml and they both look to be technologically up to date with other brands like Toshiba and whatnot.

Tarox http://www.tarox.de/produkte/noteboo...oducts&pid=130
Malibal http://www.malibal.com/products/laptops/satori.shtml
Eurocom (Canada) http://www.eurocom.ca/
and a host of others are listed but they're all Clevo/MSI/Asus rebrands.

Packard Bell was on there, I didn't know they still existed. Seems like if you're a shopper from outside the country (the US that is) you'd be able to find something on this site. http://www.nvidia.com/object/wtb_notebooks.html There's Russian, German, and multi-country sites on there, and I didn't actually look through ALL of them.

Looks like your data may be getting a little old. Inventec supplies Toshiba. Saw an article where they may pass Compal as the primary supplier. Arima is definately getting on the map now since they're the brains behind the Alienware m9700 notebook.

Actually, I've heard a lot of bad things about Toshiba laptops, but the one in my sig (bought in 2001) is still working for the friend I sold it to...it had good sound for a laptop and I kinda miss that...don't miss it's weight though...heh

http://www.malibal.com/products/lapt...n/satori.shtml

On the one hand I like the way they say exactly what you are getting, like a choice between corsair and crucial memory, the disk is a hitachi travelstar, etc. Even better, you can have two 100G disks and RAID them.

On the other hand I never heard of them and they cost more than a Dell Precision M90 for the equivalent spec machine.

Really nice thread, hope this gets stickied!

Daewoo - Korean, they don't just make cars. LOL

note: I spoke with a Clevo rep about 2 months ago. I was looking into starting up a new laptop shop. They were more than happy to be my supplier but required 1000 laptops per month min. SHEESH! needless to say I won't be pursuing that any longer.
Malibal looks like rebranded Clevo. Check out pctorque.com (which sells Sager, another Clevo rebrand company) and see if the laptops look the same.

What about FSC and Winstron?
I think FSC is Fujitsu-Siemens Computers isn't it? They're... kinda well known. I found a website for Winstron, but there's no info on it about laptops. May be that they stopped making them, only real info I've found is that they're now a contract manufacturing company... So they'll make whatever you pay them to make. And get this, they're supposed to be putting out 1 million xbox 360s... http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=16197
