what sandpaper/abrasive for sanding heatsink and 7800gtx copper shim?

what grit sandpaper would those that have lapped heatsinks and copper shims for their 7800gtx recommend?

1000grit or 500
or what about very fine steel wool its specific for metals would that be better than very fine sandpaper?

I use 500 600 and finish with 800houndred grit. I' m a bit of a perfectionist
