quick question, buying a laptop online

Is western Union a legit, secure way to transfer funds for a laptop purchase?

Are they able to return your money in the event of a fraud like paypal?
No! Do NOT use western union to buy anything unless the person ships first and you actually have it and can confirm it's working. Western Union offers NO protection. Do not rely on Paypal to keep you safe from fraud either, often times you can get your money back, but the best way to not be scammed is to keep a look out, just be cautious. PM me and I can help you with your laptop purchase if you'd like.

Yep, absolutely STOP!!

Never do that money transfer. That is the surest way to get hosed.

Do your homework first, seller should provide all varifiable info, name, address, phone number, NOT a cellphone, a landbased line/ then use Intellipoint, to reverse check the phone# and Address. Pick up the phone and call, see who answers, and where they are (caller ID) Check out user profile Do all deals thru the thread, NEVER start a deal from a PM. Print the thread where all the details of the deal are clearly spelled out. Name and model# of the laptop, specs, general condition, etc Ask For UPS or FED-X shipping with Insurance ,for full value of the purtchase. Nail down a firm shipping time. Check out heatware, and take the time to see what other traders have to say. Pick one that did a big deal with the guy you want to buy from, and ask them about the seller. Check out EBAY user id, if he has one, and see if Paypal account is verified, and address is confirmed. You can always use a service like www.escrow.com if the price is large. Sure it's a pretty big charge, but a lot better than being ripped off for the full amount. If the seller balks at any of the above, it's a good shot the deal isn't legit Ask to pay by Paypal credit card He might gripe because there is a 3% charge but if you like the deal 3% might be split between the 2 of you. With a credit card you can always dispute the charge if the thing gets to your house and looks like a tank rode over it. Wait around, the day the delivery takes place, and open the package while the driver is still there, BEFORE you sign for it. Any damage should be doccumented by the driver, as this is needed to proceed with an insurance claim. This is a general list of things to do, but it gives a pretty good idea of how to trade safe. Good Luck BD51

thanks for the info, I saw a deal for a XPS2 lappy, STACKED , and it said to email him first.

then I got this reply :

Hello,

First I want to tell you that all my units are brand new and comes with The Manufacturer's International Warranty(2 years)
I'm willing to sell it for 800 US dollars . Is very important for me to protect my clients. I have 5 units available .I have big discouns if you will buy more than one unit.
To be 100% protected we will make this deal under ebay and if something goes wrong, you will receive all your money back including western
union fees. Shipping will be made from Europe by UPS and in 40 hours you will have it. I will pay the shipping and handling fees.
Do not bid on it because I have more units available and I do not want to make
more listings and pay more fees to eBay. So if you want to make a 100% protected deal under ebay, with feedback let me know.
If you are not satisfied about my product, you have 15 days to send it to me back as I will send you all your money back (15 days refund policy). If you are interesed let me
know asap .

Thank you !

whats everyones thoughts?

It's a scam for sure. International trades are a big no-no. Western Union while it is a legitimate way to send money these scammers use fake or stolen idenities to receive the money and then passes hands 1, 2, or 3 times before it reaches the scammers hands so you'll never find them. And FYI eBay has VERY little protection for international trades.

BTW what kinda laptop you looking for I have a few for sale.

You might be able to find an I-9300 in that range (maybe not with a 6800 graphics card).
Whatever you do though, don't fall for that guys scam. I e-mailed a guy from craigslist with a similarly described system and got pretty much the exact email you posted, SCAM!
Settling for something with a lower graphics card is much better than losing the money you have saved up.
If you decide to buy off of the forums, make sure you validate their reps and get contact info before sending any $.
