How to turn Bluetooth back on?

Hi all! I turned off the Bluetooth icon in the systray ages ago and today I need it! Problem is - its not in the systray anymore and the facts are these:

1. Device manager says the Dell TrueMobile Bluetooth module is working properly, so its plugged in OK.
2. Bluetooth Configuration says "this device is stopped. To start it go to system tray, blah blah" - obviously can't see the icon in the systray!
3. Going to Taskbar and Start Menu properties and looking at the list of past and present items that have appeared in the systray - Bluetooth isn't there! Probably because it was deactived months ago and dropped off the list.
4. Going to My Bluetooth places and trying to find devices, it says "No local Bluetooth device was detected".

So it exists and it doesn't exist. Really frustrating!!!

If the actual hardware is plugged in, how do I activate the software? (It all worked fine when I did use it). Is there anything I can do in the BIOS...?

3 wishes will be granted to whoever comes up with the answer

Cheers!

PS - I just noticed that the TrueMobile Blutooth Module is listed in device manager as Location 0 (USB device). That falls beyond my knowledge, but the way I see it - its not a USB device! Its inside the laptop, right? A shiny silver rectangle...? I don't even know if this is important.

I'm reading this, but I don't see in your query whether you went into the Control Panel where the Bluetooth icon is located with the rest of the control shortcuts, like Display, Admininistrative tools, Printers and Faxes, and so on. If you go to Start/Control Panel (making sure you view it in Classic, as opposed to Category view) you'll see the bluetooth icon right there. Double click it, or right click for properties and there should be a box that is either checked or unchecked stating "Show Bluetooth device in the task bar".

Is this what you're refering to? You must have seen it, because you've stated that you've viewed your bluetooth places, and all your preferences for the Bluetooth device are right there. You can disable the device in the hardware manager, but if you have never taken that action, the device is always on, and no software drivers are required to install or update, although you could check to see if a better driver exists using the Microsoft search in Device Manager/your device/properties/drivers/update drivers.

I hope that helps.

Haha! I was writing a reply and stumbled on the solution. I had already done everything you said, but there is no tickbox to show Bluetooth anywhere.

However, My Bluetooth Places is just a system folder, so I went up one level in the hierarchy and there it was - the .exe for the systray launcher. Eejuts, could've made it easier!

I grant thee three wishes which I know you would've made:

1. A beverage of your choice in the fridge
2. Make that two
3. A pet monkey (a package will be arriving shortly).

The Dell TrueMobile Bluetooth adapter is a USB device.

Hi

I am also facing the similar probleam with dell Ispiron 6400.

I have used the bluetooth connection from laptop to connect to my mobile. But now I Bluetooth is not enabled in the laptop. Don't know how it turned off.:

1. Device manager says the Bluetooth device /module is working properly,

5. I tried to enable/off in the BIOS still bluetooth is not swithed on in laptop. There is a bluetooth light it's not glowing. long back when I used it was glowing.

Any help please ?

Cheers

I know this thread hasn't been bumped in a few days but here's some help if you haven't resolved it yet:

go into your control panel and find the icon "administrative tools". then click on "services" and you'll see a long list of services that run in the background of xp. it's all in alphabetical order, so search for bluetooth enumerator, or bluetooth, or bluetooth radio, and see what the service says. if it's stopped, just right click on the service and it will have a drop down menu that says "automatic" "manual" or "disabled". just choose automatic, and click apply and OK.

if those services aren't there (I'm at a work computer running Win98 right now, so I can't verify my laptop list of services) here's a site I found that addresses these issues. if you haven't used your lappy in awhile and it recently, or previously updated to XP service pack 2, sometimes this update shuts off the service, and doesn't load the updated BT drivers.

check here

good luck!
