I am not really a computer guy, and this will be my first laptop. For campus, they said i need to register my 12 character wireless card address to use the wifi network.

i have not gotten the laptop in the mail yet, so like where is the address at lol? and can i get it before my notebook comes (an m140, i don't play much games)?

and yes, i know, i'm a total noob

When your computer arrives, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

Enter and execute: IPCONFIG /ALL

It's the entry "Physical Address" under your wireless adapter.

That's a poor way of authentication because the physical address can be easily spoofed. Our campus had a user/password authentication. When you try to connect to an AP, a standard windows message pops up asking to input our college id and password. The password expires every 40 days or so.

Indeed it is, plus data transmission is not encrypted.... not that he has a choice exactly

What do you ya'll recomened for wireless security? I'm using a Mac filter right now...

I also only use a MAC filter for both wired and wireless. I don't really care that much about encryption. My neighbors are fairly spread out so I don't really care about it. But for someone in a big city, you may want to use encryption.

Yup. If you go for encryption, WPA is the way to go--that is, it's a better choice than WEP.
