The fans do get irritating, but I've gotten so used to them I don't even hear them anymore. I can't comment on the wireless troubles only because the wireless for me has preformed just how its supposed too. DVD burner is just as fast as I would expect, so no problems there. Is there a hotkey to disable the touchpad? Also, can I have your comments on the keyboard? Did you find that some keys required more attention to engage them?

I love everything about ASUS (except that Z71Vs' screen). Great build quality, good looking, all very nice. It was either this computer or a Z70Va, and I went with this because of horror stories with the BT, DVI-out, and better gaming performance. I'll probably go with ASUS next time, but for the time being, this unit is just fine for me.
FN-F1 disables the touchpad . I was so happy when I learned that. BUT it also disables the volume controls on the audio dj . The keyboard didn't feel right for me. It didn't have enough travel and I had to press hard. The DVD drive was slow to load cd's when I inserted one. The one here on the Asus (a Lightscribe) spins right up and it autoplays). The Pioneer in the Sager took about 10 seconds before thinking about what it wanted to do.

I think I can gripe on one thing about the Asus. The sharp edge where my wrists rest when typing. The Sager had a beveled edge the went down and felt more natural. The Asus has an abrupt sharp edge that's kinda irritating. Nothing that a gel rest can't fix but that's what gives the Asus that clean sexy look when the lid's closed.

I tried to love the Sager but it just wasn't right for me.

You sure you're not talking about the 5720? Because there was a bios update to add that. Its not on the 5320.

I'm sure. I had a 5320 (about a month ago) and it fn-f1 worked.

I noticed the same thing and forgot to mention it in the review. Thanks for reminding me.

As for the ASUS having a sharp edge, maybe that is their way of saying "lift your writsts with you type or your ass is going to get carpal tunnel"

(PS: Fn+F1 doesn't work for me)

I would say the touchpad is about average. It reacts when I want it to and the bundled software has a cool feature where if you tap it with two fingers, it does a programmed operation (refresh perhaps) and three fingers it does another programmable operation (minimize all or something)

And unfortunately yes, it still makes the “wa wa” sound. I usually prop up my notebook so it is less sever, but on the rare occasions I don’t have it propped up, it makes me worried because it sounds likes its choking. It’s still noticeable while propped up, but when its propped up, it only makes the “wa wa” sound when the fan is running at certain RPM. When the RPM’s is lower, no wa wa, higher, no wa wa. It’s strange.
But I guess I’m not the only one (if anyone else’s doesn’t , please say so).

Just when gaming or doing something intensive.

It's interesting how these fans work. Its like there are different steps of speeds. Let me give an example:

Say for example I exit out of a game... so the GPU and CPU are both smoking' hot. Once the fans cool off the components (not that long, almost instantly) the fans don't gradually slow down to a lower RPM... its like a step process. HIGH (one second of high) Medium High (one second of that) Medium (one second of that) Medium Low. If I recall correctly, the fans are generally only on low at the beginning of the startup. If I do much of anything, it turns up to medium low (still not loud at all). Once I get my voice recorder from my girlfriend, I’ll record the "wa wa" sound and the speed stepping sounds for you and post 'em up.

Gosh i sure hope not. He didn't take any pictures, he just cleaned 'em up nice. I'll be keeping this in mind if that "wa wa" comes back... means I need to clean up the heat sinks

Weight and Audio issues

hey great review, very informative ! I was wondering how heavy the laptop is along with the power brick and the battery. it says 7.5 lbs. is that with the brick and battery?

Also, do you hear a chirping sound when you use the headphones through the headphone jack?

The weight that I found on the ISTNC website is w/ battery and does not include the power brick and cord. I could do that, however the only scale I have in the house is in the bathroom, and I'm not exactly sure how accurate it is (especially when half a pound to a pound matters).

And unfortunately, I do hear the "chirping sound". It's audible with speaker and headset; however it's more prominent with a headset. It's only when the audio is turned way up, so I only hear it rarely, but it is there.

Is there a way to fix this issue other than disabling the IR port? I read somewhere it didn't fully fix the chirping sound even with the IR port disabled.

That’s interesting to hear. I haven't read that disabling the IR port gets rid of at least some if the chirping. I don't have a TV tuner installed so I thought the IR port was pretty much disabled to begin with. Do you have any links for that?
