Replacing a Gen 1 XPS -- tell me about 17" form factor

I'm ready to upgrade my XPS. It's the first gen and I've got all kinds of goodies with it, so it's still got a good bit of eBay value.

I want to get a Core Duo laptop from Dell. Dell because I can get good deals, the Complete Care warranty and I'm already familiar with the way the company works. BUT the only high-powered laptop options are 17"!!!???

I have no problem with wieght, I lug the XPS all over campus (I teach at a local university). A 17" laptop will fit in my backpack, barely. Am I going to look like a total tool taking a huge monstrosity like an E1705 out of my bag? Are there any other down sides to a 17" laptop? Any advantages? I'm already running 19x12 on my XPS, so I won't get any better resolution, just a bigger view of what I'm already seeing...

It is the best. I don't mind lugging it to classes and whipping it out....I whip it out with pride and enjoy as every stares and says WOW! haha ok that was kinda weird but anyways as they say BIGGER IS BETTER!
