Really dissapointed

Okay im dissapointed with this system. It cant even run BF2 @ medium without lagging. Im thinking that I might return it any time soon, and rather upgrade my desktop.

BUT, the question is: Will going from 1 to 2 GB RAM increase performace SO MUCH in BF2 that it will NOT lagg at medium? If the answer is yes, I might not return the system.

Specs, please.

Also, what have you done with the system so far? This will help us.

Specs:

Core Duo @ 1.83 GHz
1 GB RAM
70 GB 7,200 rpm harddrive
7800 GeForce Go

What I've done with the system so far:
I've uninstalled the Dell standard graphic-drivers. Then I ran "Drivercleaner" and installed the XTreme Mobileforce drivers, 83.60-v2.25.

Then I overclocked the GFX card to 362/887 mhz.
Then I ran Battlefield 2, with everything @ medium, and got a great dissapointment.

Edit: LiquidG, do you have a problem with lagg in BF2? If not, whats ur specs? thx

Having 2GB made a huge difference for me=no lag.

Make sure ur laptop is plugged in when u play cuz ur settings might be set to lower ur gpu clock speed when on battery.....

I have
1.86 ghz dual core
1 gig ram
80 gig 5200 rpm drive

I run all my games on high how bout you do a 3d mark 06 and tell us what u get, i almoste break 3000

I have almost the same specs as u do Liquid, but still im getting 2300 3dmarks06 with no OC. With OC = 3300 3dmark06s.

I dont understand this, why do I lag so much? But also when I have played a certain map for some time, I stop lagging, but in small firefights, my FPS drops so much its impossible to aim...

Could it be network lag?

did you get a wxga or wuxga screen??? wuxga screens require the video card to render alot of extra pixels, therefore you might need to turn the eye candy down a bit or play it at a lower resolution, try this and let us know how it works out.

Yes, I have bf2 tested with my i9300 with 1GB DDR2 and then with 2 GB DDR2. With 2GB no lags more, more smooth playing and no stopping when new textures or maps are loading. All ist faster. bf2 comsumes much RAM, like in the README written...

Network is another thing, Win XP reserves 20% network bandwith per default (many users forget that), the ping rate, how much users playing, etc ...

You may also want to consider a format and reinstall of Windows. Dell has a lot of extra crap running in the background, and you'll take a big performance hit from that as well. Extra RAM will definitely help, but I'd do a clean install if I were you.

disable the qos packet scheduler and it will release that 20% used by windows, also disable the look for network shares if you are not on a corp network. "Tuneup utilities" migth help

You are misquoting the 20% reserved bandwidth issue. QoS does not effectivly reserve or block out 20% of your bandwith dedicated. The QoS service only effects you if you have multiple programs using your network interface at the same time, so you do not have issues between slow and fast networks and packet loss. 95% or more users will never see any effect from QoS and the issue you are stating. Also you should note depending on his actual internet connection if he has cable, he will not see a problem if he has above 3Mbit down and 256Kbit up even if QoS somehow magically went into full swing (which I seriously doubt it ever has) with just the one game running. As far as what level of graphics he should be able to run with that rig, it should run faster than my i9300 and that I run on custom which is a mix of medium and high settings. I have no problems on the Net or otherwise. Sounds like something is amiss there...

Well, Im almost certain its not network lag, because my ping is very low. Also, when the lag starts, I can see that my harddrive starts working, so its gotta be hardware-based lag.

Im not quite sure if I want to do a reformat just yet. Anyways, I have uninstalled most of the bloatware from Dell that I dont need, but it still lags a bit.
My current settings is a custum combination of medium and high, but most on medium.

The lag has stopped occuring so much now, maybe it was just right after I had installed the game. But still, there is lag now and then that can be annoying. Also when I quit the game, it takes ages for Windows to load the desktop back, and I almost always have to restart my computer after playing.

Yes and no. Do not trust these MS articles, especially in security questions. They set higly big security holes to low important on their MS KB, says all...They make these articles, like they want! Trust more good tech magazines.

The QoS is for a PC in company net/LAN with apps that use it important, not for a standalone home user... Since win2000 ---> better off!

Sorry, and you are using only one app while with XP in the internet ... try netstat, what all rings home on a fresh installed XP...

if you don't end up fixing the problem and you return it, you can always buy an i9300 off of ebay and mod it with a 7800gtx and a 2.4ghz pentium M
post #18 of 29
Try using System Mechanic 6 ( ) to free up some RAM and you might as well clean the rest of your computer with it, it's a great program.
Seriosuly, like the other dude said,

If you didnt do a full reformat, u will suffer performance hit.

I promise u this. Reformat = like 25% increase in general performance for me.
