Is there a college that gives a class on how to use ffdshow ??

Or can I buy a specialy trained monkey that will configure it for me?

it looks confusing to me.

If you want to tweak and use your own custom settings, FFDShow is pretty complicated. If you just install it, open up the settings menu and make your settings look like the screenshots posted, it is extremely simple and you'll probably come out with great results. Your notebook has the power to compute just as well, if not better, than top of the line DVD players ($2000+) given the right software and settings. It takes a serious amount of computing horsepower to run these filters in real time. The settings are being handed to you on a silver platter. Couldn't be much easier.

The top one is MPC + ffdshow.

WinDVD is 2nd.
It has the blue bars at the top and bottom, with the InterVideo® WinDVD logo at top left.... :P

Sorry for the confusion.

I downloaded ffdshow and can't figure it out.

How does it interface with my player?

Instructions are non-existant, obviously most don't need them.

I am far from most!!!!!!!!!

Screenshots of settings can only help so much. A complete guide would be better.

Mostly, I based my settings on these guides, then did a bit of tweaking and experimenting....

ffdshow does take a bit of tweaking, though. And the issue of setting it up to interact with MPC is not really addressed IIRC. Maybe I'll post a little guide for doing this later .

What you need to pull this off:

1) A player that allows the use of filters:

a) Media Player Classic (MPC) - free and comes with a DVD decoder. A decoder is needed to read the DVD movie off the disc.

b) ZoomPlayer Pro - free for 30 days but you'll need to install and plug-in a separate DVD decoder such as DScaler 5.0.7

2) Filters to make the video look better

a) FFDShow is a massive package of filters with a graphical interface for changing each filter's settings. Each filter can improve the picture quality, but requires CPU power to do so (meaning there is a limit to how much image processing you can do before your system lags out and the movie skips). Go into the configuration menu and make your settings look like the screenshots above. When you install FFDShow, it will apply the filters you select to all videos you play. You'll see a small "FFD" icon in your system tray when FFDShow is being used.

You can change FFDShow configuration settings while a movie is being played and see the changes instantly.

Good point. I suppose it should be go in there as well since ZoomPlayer Pro (ZPP) isn't free either.

InterActual Player. Just Google it.

I went ahead and put MPC on my notebook here at work to check some options, but it locks up everytime I hit "File" at the top. All the other menu options work fine. So, I deleted it and downloaded MPC from another source...same thing. If I right click a video file in Windows Explorer then choose Open With MPC, it plays just fine. Any ideas what would cause this?

On a similar note, every time I open "My Computer", the window freezes. Maybe the two freezes are being caused by the same problem. Can't figure out how to fix these. I'm on a pretty fresh install of XP Pro SP2.

Theres no adware in WinDVD. It just calls home periodically. You can block it with a firewall easily, if you are concerned about it.
