Another new one and question -- second hard drive?

I just placed an order for an E1705 to replace my Gen 1 XPS.

Is the DVD drive removeable in the E1705? I really want/need a second hard drive in there like I have in my XPS. Any thoughts?

AFAIK, you cannot take out the ODD, and slot in a 2nd HDD in its place on the I9400/E1705. Unless of course, someone comes up with a good mod, I would just buy an external HDD caddy.

or use a NAS enclosure, pick one up anywhere, most of FTP capabilities as well for internet access via internet from anywhere!!!

Get a small network storage device (NAS as PCgeek mentioned) I've used this model before and works great, but can be alittle slow on older routers or 802.11b only networks)

There's no comparison between a NAS box and having a hard drive attached and inside the laptop.

Looking at the parts section of the Dell site for the 9400, the optical drive does pop right out, and they use a standard PATA interface, so there _should_ be no problem running a second hard drive... just need to buy an enclosure, or hack one of the existing enclosures for another 9xxx laptop.

knock yerself out man... hack the box, lose the DVD-RW, install another HDD, have fun.

I never said that the NAS was better, I just was giving an alternative that might be a bit safer and do the trick. Sorry i offerred advice or an alternative...... have a day

Wow... somebody's taking teh intarweb a bit too seriously... there was nothing negative in my response and you weren't the only one that suggested NAS... but what I do would take forever to stream over a broadband connection...

What about a firewire harddrive. Most are as fast as a standard notebook drive.
