Catalyst drivers and the 9000M

Let me get this straight...you can install any catalyst drivers for the 9000M 64mb and the 126mb on either the 5660, 8886, or 8887?

There's no way the 9000M is the same chipset as the 9000 Pro! We're talking about a physical card verses embedded momory: not the same thing by a longshot. Yet people are claiming the dirvers work and work well.

How is this possible?

What do you mean? The 5660/8886/8887 all have the same 9000 card, not the 9000 pro. The only difference is that the 8887 has got the extra 64 MB.

So the 9000M is the exact same board as the the desktop 9000? I don't think that's possible: the heat output and the power drain would be tremendous.

If that's not the case, them my question still stands. How can you install drivers for the desktop 9000 for the 9000M?

The Ati Radeon 9000 Pro Linux Drivers ( the Full blown AGP PCI card for desktops) install perfectly on the laptop. So that should be true for Windows By the way there is a great article at www.tomshardware.com with a topic like DX for laptops: The Ati Mobility 9000.

The card uses energy saving ressources, but vey little has been cut from the desktop version, basically nothing. I'll post the link if you can't find it

Also, keep in mind driver developers are bundling drivers for all types of devices in one package. Look at the nVidia detonator drivers, one file for all cards from TNT to Gforce4. The same holds true with the catalyst package.

Yeah, I think that's the case. The Catalyst drivers work with all radeons, or so they claim, thus every particular version is in there, not just one huge generic driver.
