Simple RAM question.

Is 200 pin DDR and 200 pin DDR2 physically interchangeable?

The reason I ask is that my lap top specs say it can take 1GB of DDR or 2GB DDR2. For some reason I thought the two different types took two different kinds of slots so I can't see how this can be.

That's what I thought, so how can my notebook accept both kinds? There are only two slots for RAM and right now I have DDR in both of them.

THen you'll need to get DDR ram. Some laptops originaly sold with DDR then the manufacturer upgraded later versions of the same model to use ddr2.

Your dv4000 only accepts DDR. The dv4000s with the ATI x700 only take DDR2; this ability was added as a mid-life update to the system when they introduced the dedicated graphics option. I'm sure the ones with integrated graphics like yours still ship using DDR only. Unfortunately, the HP site is pretty vague, and doesn't really point out this difference.
