Antivirus/firewall Software Reccomendations

I know this issue has come up lately but i cannot get the search feature to work
well anyways, ive decided to ditch the pre installed Norton security suite and go for a more leaner, less resource hogging antivirus/firewall. ive heard and checked out a few sites that said Kaspersky and Bitdefender were excellent antivius software and that zone alarm pro was a good firewall. what do u people think of the software or any others you reccomend? whats the good, whats the bad features in your opinion? theres so many different companies out there its confusing to know which ones to go with , unless you know of actual user opinions

thnx for any input

i use kaspersky anti-hacker and anti-virus... and i find it great. They take up very little resources compared to Nortan antivirus and ZoneAlarmPro. Very easy to use and setup.

I use NOD32. It to has a small signature.

AVG makes a good choice, or you can try Free-AV (www.free-av.com)

i really dont mind paying for antivirus/firewall protection...as long as they are effective and they dont hog a lot of memory

Currently using BitDefender Pro (combined AV, FW and Spam).

This is the first time I've ever paid for AV or FW software and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it's worth ever penny.

The AV is spot on, hasn't let anything in - it just stops the nasties dead in their tracks! You can even use it to scan mapped network drives, which is something that some other AVs I've tested won't do.

The firewall is easy to configure, and pretty bullet-proof.

Updates are frequent, silent, and fast.

A full virus scan on my Aspire 2023WLMi seems pretty quick. TBH that depends on what's on the drive though, if you set it to scan inside Archives it takes a little longer (but that's to be expected I suppose). It even scans within your Outlook .pst files as well

I will be renewing my licence when it's due in a few months. I'm so happy with it in fact that I've recommended it to family, friends, and clients, and nobody has had a bad word to say about it.

Doesn't seem too use that much (although that's just a subjective opinion).

I'm happy to put a figure on it for you, but I haven't got a clue where to start. If there's an accepted way of doing so (or if there's a tool that I can use to find out) let me know and I'll do that for you.

well u could count how many background processes are associated with bitdefender and how much memory each process uses. i know that norton security suite has around 5 or 6 processes constantly running and consumes 50MB
post #11 of 24
Ok:

5 Processes, showing 0 (zero) CPU usage and a total of 40,992k Mem Usage.

That's with the firewall running, the AV running in the background, and the graphical display on the desktop that shows "File Zone" and "Net Zone" scanning as it occurs.

Hope that helps

i tried pandaware titanium once (AV FW basically everything). it was really awesome but hogged a lot of resources so i went back to AVG Free and ZoneAlarm

well i just thought id say how well zone alarm pro(firewall), bitdefender standard(antiv) and kapsersky(antv) ran on my system.

zonealarm pro is a great robust firewall . plenty of tweaks and options. no stability issues or strange behaviour although there were loads of prompts about programs trying to access the internet but this can be fixed in the control panel. only has 2 processes. one suprise i got was when i used the cache cleaner....i recovered almost 500MB in disk space

bitdefender 9 standard was also a great robust antivirus . definelty leaner on the resources compared to norton antiv...i experienced a 33% reduction in boot time using bitdefender 9. there are 5 processes attached to the antiv which seems like a lot but doesnt have a bigger performance hit compared to norton.

kaspersky antiv 5 was a nightmare . once i installed it and tried to connect to aol via dsl, at a certain point during the process, the system crashed.....and it always crashed at the same point which was a mystery to me . i decided to uninstall kaspersky and when i rebooted and the OS was loading, the display was all garbled. it turned out that the unistall corrupted the nvidia display drivers . so it wasnt a good experience for me .

Free and good at keeping the nasties away. I use it myself.

Antivir Personal and Outpost. By far the best combination IMO.

I use Avast!

It has nearly daily updates and only eats about 20-25MB of RAM. Of course I disabled some of the extra providers which I have no use for such as P2P shield and Outlook shield.

Is McAfee security center as much a resource hog as norton? cause i just got a new dell and start up seems to take a long time
post #18 of 24
I use nod32 and like it so much that i bought several licenses. I tried mcafree, pccilian, norton, panda and none of these met my criteria.
1. wanted a low profile that didnt interfere.
2.wanted complete control
3. wanted a virus program that didnt tweak the registry thus screwing around with other programs (which is quite different from it being a system hog).

Nod met all of these.

Klapasky i never tried but when nod32 starts becoming bloatware than i will try this one.
