General questions for 8887 owners

I've been looking over these boards for an hour now. I ask these questions because I could not find them answered already and/or they were not answered to my 'satisfaction'. Please excuse me if some of these are repeats.

All right. I have $2,400 saved up to spend on a new computer, and I'm thinking of getting an 8887 with a 2.66 mhz CPU, 512 megs of RAM, and a 60 gig hard drive. I will install XP Pro myself.

Questions--

1: When the unit ships, even though I've ordered no OS, will I get driver cd's?

2: How does the driver for the external MP3 player work? I won't be getting one, so I won't install the driver. Will windows complain about that?

3: I've had a Dell Inspiron 5000 for about three years now, and have had very few physical problems with it. Can I expect the same reliability/durability from this Sager model? I like big, solid laptops.

4: I've heard that the 15.0 UXGA display for the 5660 is actually better than the 16.1 for the 8887. Is this true?

5: I like loud, crisp music as much as the next person. How nice are the external speakers? The ones on my old Dell are absolutely terrible.

6: I am a relatively frequent gamer. I will install Age of Mythology, No One Lives Forever 2, Jedi Knight II, and Splinter Cell (as soon as it's out). I consider 40 fps to be the minimum playable framerate. If I run these games at 1024x760x32 and details maxed, can I expect this kind of performance constantly? (I know how to tune the jeebus out of a PC, so don't worry about that.)

7: It doesn't matter what anyone says, there still is ghosting on TFT displays. How noticeable is it when playing movies and games?

8: How long will that battery last with low to moderate usage? (text editing, web browsing, ect.) I know I can't expect much with the desktop processor...

That pretty much wraps it up. Thanks in advance.

I will answer the ones I can.

1. You get a Drivers CD
2. The MP3 player is recognized just like a hard drive. If you don't have it windows will never know or care.
4. It has to be personal preference. Some people like the size of the 8887. Other people like the viewing angles of the 5660. There are plenty of pictures in the review forums.

hope this helps

Well I'm not quite a owner yet (gotta wait for the cash unfortuently) but after reading Beebster's review in the review section http://sagerforums.com/forums/showth...&threadid=1061 I would say that the ghosting is minimal, the battery life for avg tasks seems pretty good as well (I think the last count was 2hrs 10 mins) The Sager Laptop seems to be of very good contrstruction, I wouldnt suggest dropping it from a height but it should survive for many a moon.
The 15" screen on the 5660 does have better viewing angles than the 8887 but from the pictures that I've seen its not enough of a selling point for me (even though the pictures make that 5660 look sharp http://sagerforums.com/forums/showth...&threadid=1195 )
About the speakers, from what I understand the speakers arn't the best on the planet, they sound like laptop speakers if that helps

and from the review Beebster did (look at the link at the top of this post) the games that you've chosen should run at that res and give you 40fps if not better.

Hope that helps

5. Not that I know anything to compare it to necessarily, but in my opinion they sound very nice and play my MP3's very well-I think I hear the music better here than in the car .

Please, PLEASE check out Beebster's review on the 8887. You should find it quite helpful for some of these questions. Click here for it.

When playing movies, it's noticeable on large-scale movements, like when an actor shifts from one side of the screen to another or something of the sort, since you can see the ghost at the same time as the real image.

Battery usage--I'm hearing around 1:31 on heavier processing, maybe 2:10 for word processing and such--see Beebster's review for that.

This Sager model? I can't say for this one yet, but my mom got a Sager laptop in 1998, and it still works perfectly. I think that's a very good sign.

Thanks, guys. I've read the review, and it helped with some of my questions.
