Emachines - Athlon 3000+ and 9600.

Still doesnt perform like a Sager with a good chip - but its sure as hell a good price and a good machine (specs wise) for the price. As with all emachines it will be interesting to see how crappy the construction is.

in stick and shipping in 1-2 days. Anyone tried one of these yet? I'm curious to see how it will perform. I'm gonna go to best buy either saturday or sunday to see if they have 1 on display.

Wow... that's really cheap, 15.4" WXGA screen, AMD64 3000+, 60GB, 512MB, ATI 9600 64MB, and WiFi G at only $1,549. It's time for me to sell my 1 year old eMachine and buy a new one.

I ordered one when I found this in another thread. It was backordered and shipped today. I will post a review when it arrives.

Keep us posted, gonzo.

It's a very interesting machine. When do you expect it?

UPS says it will be here the 20th

Just thought I would mention

Was looking at it in best buy, and the thing kept crashing dxdiag and other small applications I would run on it. Not connected to the internet or a lan or anything so it most likely wasnt a virus. Also, it ran hot just running windows.

I realize there could have been something wrong with it (which is why it was the display item) but thats just what I observed.

Oh and also, the touchpad was horrible imo.

Lastly, out of the 512 meg ram that you are supposed to have, it only had 442

I think the laptop in discussion is the new EMachines Athlon 64 + Mobility Radeon. They have another model with Athlon XP + Radeon IGP. Completely different machines.

Was looking at the eMachines here in Japan a couple weeks ago. I asked about that same memory discrepancy. Guy told me it was because the vram was shared memory and not a dedicated chip. Hmm. It fit the bill there as the discrepancy was 64mb. However, we checked the machine sitting next to it and it showed 512mb RAM just fine. I'm wondering if some of the units are just hosed? Or are they using screwy memory chips? *shrugs*

Just had a guy on another forum PM me wanting to sell one of these to me. Pretty much got my mind set on a Sager 8790- sorry guy I'll probably aim him over here, though. Might be someone interested.

I checked out one of these at CC today. I was very impressed. Having had a friend that had an Emachines, I wasn't expecting much. However, I really think that this company is making a very big turn around in the quality of their products. This thing was solid. I was expecting a flimsy, cheap notebook with a powerful processor and video card and not much else. It was nice to see a well built notebook instead.

The screen looked very bright and sharp. There wasn't any dead pixels at all. The keyboard was solid and not mushy at all.

Also, the notebook seemed very cool. I was expecting it to run very hot, but I didn't notice much heat on the bottom at all. It was much much cooler than my current notebook.

Hopefully some of the people that bought some of these this weekend will give us their impressions. I will say that after my quick look over, I'm leaning more towards this notebook than any other. An Emachines on my desk... who would have though?

They have 'em at Circuit City? I went to Best Buy to check it out but they didn't have any on display. I may have to swing by CC tomorrow.

It is a compelling machine. I've also heard that eMachines is making great strides to turn things around. They've even bested some of the big names in service and reliability polls. I can already hear the jokes if I show up to a lan party with an emachine. But, if I get a good laptop at a great price, I won't care. I'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

You guys have my interest. Please keep the rest of us informed when the notebooks you ordered come in. I'd love to see what your benches say.

Thanks!

Arrrggggh

Just found this on eMachines web site
http://www.emachines.com/products/pr...Machines_M6807

The 6807 is the same one as BestBuy has (6805) but includes a DVD burner and is priced the same after rebate. Can't find a rebate coupon on either Emachines or BestBuys site.

The specs on the 6807 say it has integrated graphics Emachines says the 6805 has 9600 graphics with 64mb video memory, but the ati link is the same both models(IGP 320). Any one know if the IGP 320 is the mobile version of the 9600? That would jibe with the 442 memory remaining memory. cazicthule are you sure that was a 6805?

BestBuy said it was 1.5 in. Emachines says it is 1.6 in. All I can say is that it may very well go back unopened. To avoid the 15% restocking fee.

Right now I am wishing I had just bought one of those MX51s from Michaels computers.

I still got 24 hours to make up my mind. right now I am taking it back, but that will change 5 times in the next 4 hours. Anyone seen a 6805 and a 6807 side by side?

I'd group it in heavy desktop replacement. I never go with any thing except centrino when it comes to laptops. Anything else generates way too much heat and has too short of a battery life to be called a proper laptop. But I guess if you plan to just plug it in wherever u go and buy a notebook cooler, I don't see much of a problem.

Unless you like stress, don't buy from michael. A member here, MEDDUDE, ordered one a while back and after he paid he never heard back from "Michael". Luckily he paid with credit and got his money back. Michaels is somewhat legitaimate as several members have attested to the existance of other michaels laptops, but his FX-51 version (kind meddude bought) looks the same as the athlon 64s shipped by other companies and no one knows of anyone who has it or who makes it for that matter.

The Michaels stuff was just a joke. It looks like I am getting the same amount of stress from BestBuy

The IGP 320 is the shared memory integrated graphics. But don't stress too badly. I think their links and site info are a little messed up. Everything I've seen so far indicates the Radeon 9600 with 64MB memory as the actual card. The 6805 and 6807 are identical machines save for the DVD burner. See here: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,114357,00.asp

I think there is some confusion from vendors, websites, and others because this is such a new model and a major departure from what most people expect from eMachines. I'd bet that the machines that people are referring to with memory discrepencies are the previous 53xx series with shared video.

Circuit City has both the 6805 adn 6807 on their web site (not yet available in all stores) with a $100 rebate and a bit more liberal return/exchange policy (returned two LCD monitors within 30 days no questions asked).

Emachines 6805

I picked one up today at Best Buy 1549 -100(rebate)+60 in gift cards.Overall
a nice basic laptop,no frills, build good, from what I can tell it is made by Arima
Computer,it is not an IGP,its 9600 64meg.it runs cool for an amd,i.e. the cooling
works very well(I 've been using for last four hours)its not to big or heavy(7.5#)
seems well built(although not as good as my T40p)
3dmark 2001SE 9112
SiSoft hrystone 7535
Whetstone 1263/3698

Memory bandwith 2477,2476

CPU seams a bit slower than an Intel of same speed. But worth 1389+tax
