come on people i need your input

I stay away from IBM because of all of their proprietary games they've pulled on me... and I know a few people that own a Toshibas and are happy with them

I'm one of those people.

IF those are your only options then go for the Toshiba. But if you can, I'd try and find something with a Pentium M in it (not the P4-M) in order to lighten the load a good bit since you're gong to be taking it to class with you.

yeah well what i was thinking is to get the toshiba and try to trade it with my old armada m700 for something better and yes i know alot of people have been telling me to get a PM instead of a celly or a P4M but the price for one are alot higher the the price i was getting the toshiba for i was thinking that i might be able to get a better trading value then for it cuz all i might be able to add to the value of both of them is like 40$usd

edit: i am almost sure i can't but can i put a PM in the toshiba
post #8 of 26
No. You should be able to put a P4 in there (even one of the HT ones) but a PM is not going to happen.

so in your opinion should i buy the toshiba and try to trade it for a higher value with my m700 against another PM lappy at a local used computer store or should i keep the toshiba and get some upgrade material with the m700 like extra stick of mem

I work with CnC machines and Matercam too !!
Sorry but i think your budget is very low
All this notebooks will be very slow machines to mastercam and autocad..
but if i have to choose a machine , il choose the second one.
Toshiba have a better graphics card , a faster processor and DDR memory, which is cheaper than SDRAM!!
If you could spend a little more it would be very nice!!

well at school for the mastercam class whe have P4 1.7ghz with 768mb of ram and onboard 8XX intel card and it runs mastercam 10 pretty good as for autocad i have been using the 2005 version for the last 8 month on my armada m700 with not much of a problem ...but i must admit i havent done any 3d toolpath yet in master cam and this maybe where indeed my budget lappy will show its weakness but hey what can i do i have to go with my budget and this is all i have for now but i have abit of cross trading going on at the moment and what i think ill go with is the toshiba and add a 512mb of ram to it and i might be able to get a P4 3ghz with HT for it and a faster hdd anyway no mather what happen ill have to do the best i can with what ill get but thx for your point of view

edit:
the requirement for mastercam arnt that great according to there website
1.5 GHz Intel processor
Windows® XP or Windows 2000 with latest service packs and updates; .NET 1.1 framework and DirectX ® version 9.Oc.
512 Mb RAM, 1 GB available hard disk space
64 MB OpenGL-compatible (minimum)
1024 x 768 resolution (minimum)

Don't get those 4 generations old systems.

Look around for Acer Aspire systems based on the Celeron M

You can probably find one for about 800 CND

You said it all!! Toshiba doesnt have an 7500 (Compac and Ibm) but it have 64mb not shared and thats very important!! when you start to make some works on 3d you will see what i mean.. BTW take a look on extreme graphics card for CAD-CAM all them have lots of memory..

Sorry , im but i have to tell you my opinion about your school computers.. the specs of that computers are totaly obsolete and not apropriated to this kind of function "onboard 8XX intel card"
with that kind of spec i will take all day looonnnngggg to calculate a surface...
When i was at school 3 years ago we had p4 with Wildcat on there, i cant remember spec!! nowadays in my work we have 4 workstations with Nvidia Quadro FX 4400 inside ,dual xeon and 4gb of memory each machine!! powerful machines ...
About you choice..
Im happy with your choice!! toshiba seems to be the best machine of them!!
An humble advice..
I think before you change cpu or put a better Hdd on your future notebook please put 1gb of memory on it !! memory is the fastest way to improve "real solid" performance, second is a better Hdd and for last cpu.
changing cpu from celeron 2.7ghz to p4-2.8ghz with HT will not improve as much you are thinking!! (HT is emulation of cores. not a real core!!! IT sucks!! Prove of that, is the battle between Amd64 and P4-HT, if you want real power you must have multiple core).
