Video Card Upgrade on Inspiron 6000

Thread Starter
I bought an Inspiron 6000 with a ATI Mobility Radeon X3000 (64mb) in August 2005. I now am considering upgrading my video card, but don't know what I'm able to upgrade to. How do I determine what the fastest card available for me to upgrade? Is there a site I can refer to that would show me all the upgrade options?

I check Dell's site and it said there were no upgrades available for my system. I also checked Newegg.com but only found one X300 card. Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm not sure if you can, but if you can the best one should be the 128MB version of the same thing. It's supposed to be a good amount better because of not using shared memory or something. There was a thread recently about that if you can find it.

^^^ Correct, the best video card available for your system is the 128MB version of your current card, the x300. No other video cards will fit, let alone run, in the i6000. Also, as it is a proprietory form factor it is only available through Dell spare parts, you must phone to order.

Damn,
I had a guy that was gonna buy my 6800 to put in his i6000.
Well, I guess I won't be buying that 7800

heh, yeah, theres tons of questions on this, 128 x300 is the tops.

Dell wants $142.99 for the 128mb X300. That seems a little steep as I understand the performance boost is not that significant. Do any of you know what the performance difference is between the two cards?

Don't know yet, that model has not been released so no-one has been able to try a transplant yet. It looks to be in a compatible form factor... but whether or not the hardware is compatible with the chipset and BIOS of the i6000 remains to be seen. Patience grasshopper.

Quick question: Does the 128M X300 for the 9300 work in the 6000? Thanks!

Had a chat session today. I dunno if it means anything...but I asked about the possibilities of a inspiron 6000 upgrade from the X300...lol

4:08:02 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner So you want another video card to put in the system?
4:08:10 PM You I just had a basic inquiry about the graphic card upgrades available for the 6000 model
4:08:51 PM You i heard that the Inspiron 6400 (next model from the 6000) has the same video card size that it may be able to fit in the 6000...the ATI Mobility X1400 video card
4:08:55 PM You is this true?
4:09:14 PM You will there by any new video cards that are able to fit the 6000 in pci express format?
4:10:02 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner Give me a few minutes to research and see.
4:10:13 PM You okay thank you
4:12:22 PM You here is a link to the similar video card structures that i have found from notebookforums. com http://www.notebookforums.com/showpo...67&postcount=8
4:14:01 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner Give me a minute.
4:15:30 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner Have you tried looking on dell.com.
4:16:26 PM You Yeah.
4:17:23 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner Did you find anything there?
4:18:54 PM You It was to my understanding that the X1400 hasn't been released yet from Dell and since the Inspiron 6400 just came out, it may take a while. I was just wondering if the video card, when it comes out, will be compatible with the 6000
4:19:25 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner I'm checking now to see.
4:19:43 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner Yes it should work.
4:20:19 PM You do you have a timeframe of when the new X1400 will be available in spare parts?
4:20:41 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner NO.
4:21:03 PM You but it is coming out relatively soon right?
4:21:46 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner I don't know when it will be available in spare parts.
4:21:58 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner Yes.
4:22:32 PM You Okay, thank you...and just to make sure, the video card that comes out for the Inspiron 6400 will be compatible for installation in the Inspiron 6000?
4:22:42 PM RTS Jacqueline Gardner Yes it should be.
4:23:36 PM You Okay, thank you very much

how good is a 128mb x1400 ( assuming that 128mb is the max that dell will provide ) against a 128m x300.. any "major" significant change when used in gameplay?

Well, an X300 Mobility equals a Radeon 9600 regular in desktop form.

So a X1400 Mobility is probably around a regular Radeon 9800 in desktop form.

It seems like a good upgrade, but probably won't play today's games on high settings.

WOW, 9800 eh? Thats pretty good...I think....Right? I read somewhere that the x1400 will only have 4 pixel piplines and 2 vertex shaders just like the x300, but with Pixel shader 3.0. I might be wrong on the info though. Anyone have a guess on the clock speed of ram and gpu?

Oh, I love wild guesses.

I guess gpu speed and powerconsumption will be that much higher than the x300s that you can't use it in the 6000

Depends on if the BIOS will recognize the x1400 card being put into an I6000. Probably not.
i read somewhere that the x1400 will be a 256meg card, but wait...

only 32mb on card, rest is shared with system ram.
if thats the case then ill be buying a 1705. as much as i like the 6000/6400 size, im not buying a crap card.

some may think the x300 128mb version is crap, but its not shared, and it was the best avail. at time of purchase.
