Video Card Upgrade on Inspiron 6000 - Page 2

chevy... there is nothing yet confirming if the x1400 will be fully dedicated or not. if they follow in the 6000's footsteps it will be. and the x300 128meg will work in the i6400D once it is released.

^^^ The i6000 version of the X300 or the i6400 version?

the x300 from the I6000D will work in the I6400D

if thats the case then ill be buying a 1705. as much as i like the 6000/6400 size, im not buying a crap card.

some may think the x300 128mb version is crap, but its not shared, and it was the best avail. at time of purchase.
Maybe thats what "Hypermemory" is? if it says that anyways

It is looking more like the X1300/X1400 taken from the I6400 may not work in the I6000 because the video BIOS is on the system board of the I6400.
Even though the GPU from the I6400 could physically fit into the I6000, the lack of a proper video BIOS on the X1300/X1400 may stop it from functioning in the I6000...

FWIW: The I6400 X1300&X1400 w/their associated SKU numbers....

256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™
256ATI - [ 320-4655 ]

128MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300 HyperMemory™
128ATI - [ 320-4654 ]

that's a shame :P

I don't see how that suggests that there is no video bios on the card itself...

Actually it would make no sense whatsoever for the video bios to be on the system board rather than on the graphics board. Why would they want a different chip that they would have to change out on the board? Or why would they want to have to flash the bios to whatever card was purchased when all they need to do is plug in a video card.

I think the only way that anyone will find out if this works or not, will be to actually perform the swap. All this conjecture serves no purpose.

Thread Starter
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm still interested in upgrading my video card. Is the x300 128mb (bought only through Dell) still the best/only card for me? Thanks.

yes, and always will be.

Worth it to upgrade video card on I-6000?

I have been kicking around the idea of buying a new laptop, but I just cant seem to justify it. My Inspiron 6000 runs great and I am having no problems with it. I think my wireless card is on the fritz, so I will replace it and I have been thinking about other upgrades. Would it be worth it to upgrade my video card from 64mb to 128mb? I haven't priced them yet, but it can't be that expensive. What other upgrades would you guys suggest?

I figure I will just hold on to this and spend the money on a desktop, which I have been wanting to get for a while now.

I am looking to upgrade my card from 64mb. Would it be worth it to go to the 128? Anyone know of where to get one cheap?
I have found a 128mb card used at a decent price. If I get one, what else would I need in order to install it? How hard is it to install?
whats a decent price? I personally feel the upgrade to be lackluster if your NOT a gamer.

I got one for $40. I watch a decent amount of video and I am hoping that it will make it a little clearer.

video card 128M X300 not working

Hello,

I read the whole thread and I was wondering if there was any update concerning the topic.

I have upgraded my Inspiron 6000 from a 64 to a 128 video card I bought from ebay. (ATI X300 128 MB - W5320)

Unfortunately I get a black screen even though my laptop seems to start up fine (by hearing to the welcome sound of Windows).

I was wondering if I had to install a specific driver for the 128? or do I need to send it back as a DOA?

Thanks!

Any differences if you boot up under Safe Mode?

cheers ...
hello qhn, thanks for your tip. I could try that but what am I supposed to do once it started in safe mode? Although I am pretty sure I won't be able to see a damn thing on the screen anyway..

Going into Safe Mode would remove the possibility of bad/incompatible graphic driver. And I hope that you would see the screen. If not then we have a possible hardware issue.

cheers ...
