Abnormally bold minimize, maximize, close buttons in XP

On the last two laptops I've had, a clean install of XP using the default "Windows XP" theme yields abnormally large (bold) minimize, maximize, and close buttons on windows. I've used different XP Pro disks and the same thing happens. I don't know if Windows detects a high-res screen (WSXGA+, 1680x1050 in both cases) and trys to make visibility "easier" for me, or what. Now, I can manually alter the themes to get the right size values, not that I really care that much. I'd just like to know WHY?

Top images is what I see with the default Windows XP theme. Bottom image is "normal", what I'd like. This is something I've been curious about for a while. Maybe somebody knows what's going on. Thanks in advance.

Go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced-> General

Set your DPI setting back to 96dpi. That should do it. One thing to watch out for is that your text will be smaller as a result.

Aha! I prefer 120 dpi. Thanks for solving the mystery, though, flanken! I actually feel better now. Cheers.
