while playing cs, my control key in the bottom left hand corner broke off. I wasnt slamming it or anything, it just broke off. Is this covered by the standard warranty? Or is there a way i can just stick it back on

If the key actually BROKE off, then just have dell send you a new keyboard and do the replacement yourself.

notebook keyboards suck.. i hd something stuck under the enter key of my 9100 so i took it off to fix it.. big mistake.. each key is comprised by about 5+ individual parts.. it took about 4 hours to figure out how to fix it.. during which, i broke one of the small plastic rectangles.. so it never went back on correctly.. As long as you dont think you lost anything, get yourself a magnifying glass, some small tweezers a very small screwdriver (or a pin or somehting.. you dont need to "screw", but it may help in conjunction with the tweezers) and plenty of time and patience and as long as nothing is broken you'll be able to figure it out.. if that doesn't work, yell at tdell and see if they'll fix it.. else keyboards generally go fairly cheap on eBay..

theyre sending me a replacement lol

Awesome!! I wouldn't send my laptop just for a keyboard replacement. Fix it yourself!

Best keyboard I have felt is my Thinkpad T43 laptop. That thing is very awesome.. Snappy keys, no flex. Even though I don't get much flex with my XPS Gen2.

Awesome deal on them sending the keyboard though!

I also have a replacement keyboard coming for my dell... are they more likely to send someone to install the keyboard or just send the keyboard for me to install myself?

Chances are, they will just send you the keyboard. When they send someone to install it, they will tell you the tech will call you to schedule a time to service your laptop.

If you need assistance, Dells Website has awesome docs. I replaced my videocard (6800 to 7800) by going off the docs.

Well they did ask for my number, but they didn't say whether or not they'd actually send a tech person.

It will depends on your warrenty. If you have at-home service, a tech will call you and schedule a time. If you have mail in, they will just send you the replacement part and you install it yourself.

i have the regular warranty and theyre letting me send it back to them to replace it and they gave me the option to have me replace it myself

Thats awesome.. its real easy. If you have any questions or concerns, you can PM me.

heh, they wanted to send someone out to fix my lcd...i told them I thought I was ok doing it myself. They didnt seem to mind. I use their chat service every chance I get. They are less likely to hang up on you cuz they send the chat log out to your email....nothing like proof on your side.

I'd rather just install it myself, rather then sending it in and being without my computer for a few days.

I have at-home service, so they'll probably send someone.

I just replaced mine a few days ago because I broke the spacebar. I would recomend doing it yourself. that way you dont have to wait for someone to come to your home to do it, or wait for them to do it at their service center. It's so simple to do it will take you 3 minuets tops...and thats if your EXTREMLY careful.

All you have to do is pop off the power button pannel, unscrew 2 screws, remone the connection and then plug in the new one screw it in and snap theh top cover back on. Simple!

This really pisses me off now. I called dell wanting a replacement keyboard (under standard warranty) because my alt key broke off and they kept telling me that I would have to pay for a new keyboard Should I just try going through the chat service instead of talking to someone?

Chat seemed to work fine for me... they told me that they'd send me a new keyboard for free.
