Sony FE CPU socketed or user upgradeable?

I'm thinking of getting a Sony FE from Best Buy and upgrading the CPU myself to feed my WOW addiction. It'll be cheaper to do this because Sony is charging $600+ for the same chip!

Anyone know if the FE's CPU is socketed?

Pentium M Core Duo T2600: $446

No Idea, to get to the processor you have to take it almost completely apart, so it seems at least in this respect Sony didn't intend the end user to change the CPU. HD and RAM are easily accessible.

I'm thinking it is upgradable since you can configure it on their web site. It can't be as bad as taking apart the T series

That link says that the processor is $669, not $446, which is actually more than the $620 Sony will charge you to upgrage!

BTW - the FE is CPU user upgradeable! It's an easy disassembly compared to the T series. The CPU is locked by a plastic socket screw.

bpg: I guess you installed your 2 GB 667 RAM yourself (Brand?)? How much did you have before? Did you run 3D Mark before and after?

I am asking cause I just got 2 gigs of Corsair 667 RAM and my numbers didn't change a bit...the 3D Mark actually decreased 11 points (1704). Just wondering if that is normal

I have Crucial memory, I bought the laptop with 512MB. Before I updated the drivers I ran 3DMark05 with both 512MB and 2048MB and got 1100? and 1200? (cant remember exactly). Then I ran it again with the updated driver with 2048MB and got a score of 1736.

I dont know why your score actually decreased with the new ram. How much did you have in it before?

Same as you, 512. Well, our scores are kind of comparable with 2GB, but then it's strange that I got such a high score with the 512 that it came with.... But I guess your scores are also kind of similar with the same driver

What updated driver? From nVidia?

I know this thread is about upgrading the CPU, but i thought i would ask here anyway. Is it possible to upgrade the GPU in the Vaio FE?

decump,

How did the install of the new cpu go? Did you happen to take some pics of the process? How is your machine running now with the faster cpu? Just looking for some details because i plan on doing the same thing!!!
