How will upgrading to Windows Vista work?

I assume most of us are using Windows XP, By the end of this year windows vista will be released.

Can you upgrade from just buying a windows vista software and insert it/install and everything will be still on your hardrive with a whole new look or will everything be lost? or worst yet need a whole new computer?

Blah?!

From what I've read, you can upgrade from XP. Whether your computer can actually do that probably depends on the machine's specs. I can't imagine Vista's going to require system specs that are too outrageous as not many people are going to buy a new computer just in order to run Vista. I would imagine that it will run on most computers nowadays. Doubt I'll be able to put it on my P3 700mhz, but most 2-3 yr old computers should be fine (my guess).

I think that Vista will dumb itself down according to your specs during install (i.e.- not enabling Aero when you have limited graphic card abilities, etc.)

Don't take any of that as gospel, tho'.
Just my 1/2 cent worth.

What exactly is Vista and is it better than XP?

vista=long awaited, overly delayed, overly hyped new OS from microsoft. now is targeted for release EOY 2006

you buy a new computer with vista...only way, lol.

I believe that an upgrade method has already been confirmed as existing.

Also, there's a lot of confusion over what PCs will run Vista. What people do not understand is that to get the full Aero UI effect, you do indeed need a decent video card, however, not having a good video card does not mean you cannot use Vista.

I haven't read anything about Vista, only saw one screenshot, and I didn't see any thing special, apart from the fact the toolbar was on the left, and the clock was remodelled (ooh)

Doesn't anyone have a list of new specs for Vista, what it can do, if it can 'do' better than XP? How many more features can you add to an operating system, really? I would like to see it, and can't wait to use it, but I just can't really comprehend its functionability. If that is even a word!

NEW MICROSOFT VISTA!
New FABULOUS Features...
-Remodelled System Clock
-Can travel through time
-Has a cool name

-Maybe a remodelled notepad

Retails at only $999.99!

That WAS the buzz, but many of the features that were part of this big jump, like Virtual Folders, were cut out of the OS.

It remains to be seen if Vista will be that big of a step.

you want the vista look and feel, just get window blinds...
It won't be the same. Windows Vista is more improved then Windows XP but its going to be buggy similar to Windows XP when its offically out. Right now, in beta, it feels better then XP on some parts but I'm pretty sure thats gonna change very quickly.

For those wondering about Vista and what it offers, this is a good overview:

I just hope Windows Vista is like Windows ME. Man, did that OS just bring trouble after trouble. Personally? "If it ain't broken, don't fix it." Stay with XP. :P
post #16 of 27
I take it you mean you hope Vista is not like ME?

You might find you don't have the choice to stick with XP, as it will not support HD DVD or Blu-ray (apparently) and games in time may be launched for Vista only.

Well I imagine it will work like most major OS releases that MS puts out. We'll run down to our local Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal*mart or 7-11 and grab which ever one of the dozen or so versions of Vista that are being released best fits our needs.

Once we get home and rip the plastic off the box, we'll run back to the store for more RAM and maybe a new video card for all that fancy interface stuff.

We'll install Vista, only to discover that one USB device that we absolutley must have does not have a Vista driver and probably won't for a couple of months, if ever. And of course the support software (if we don't use the stuff built into windows) for our cameras, scanners, MFDs etc may need to be patched or replaced.

We then realize that our cherished copies of Nortan AV, McAfee AV, SystemWorks, Spyware Mutilator and most other system utilities don't work with Vista. We'll have to buy new copies of most of that stuff.

And of course there are all our other applications, that will probably work Ok for the most part; some may require a patch to run properly.

We'll have to wait and see, I imagine as launch day gets nearer we'll get a clearer picture of how upgrading will work.

Yeah, that's what i meant. I hope Windows Vista will not like be Windows ME.*

Furthermore, there are choices. Especially since the launch of next-gen consoles will be released later this year, it's a decision everyone will soon make: Will you upgrade your pc and/or buy a next gen console? (Heh, why play Halo 2 on a PC when Halo 3 will be out for X-Box 360?)

HD DVD is to X-Box 360, as Blue Ray is to PS3--correct?

As much as a new OS would benefit so much, I still see a lot of ppl using windows 2000 as their OS in their machines. It really depends on your funds and what you're comfortable with.
