Hello everyone, I'm hoping someone can offer some help. My notebook shuts down quite suddenly while I am working on it. It seems to happen randomly. I have set the power management to "never" on all levels including hibernation and standby. Any ideas?

overheating?

I was also thinking overheating. Before it shuts down are the fans going? Do the fans ever go on (are they working)?
And when it shuts down, do you have to wait a little bit before you can turn it back on, or can you turn it back on right away?

you should try Everest home or Speed Fan and check the temperatures.

Ok, I will try this. The fans are constantly going and I don't seem to have to wait to boot up again, but this can't be good for it .

Where you use the machine, are the vents blocked? Is there dust, pet hair, other crap in the vents? There may be dust built up around the heatsink fins.

If the laptop is under warranty take it to specialist.
If not, use a domestic vacum cleaner against air intake.
If you can take some screws out, clean the heatsink.
I have seen many cases got better with some cleaning...

Also, if your fans are running constantly there maybe a program thats causing it to do so. If you get into the "Windows task manager" (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and look for the "Processes" tab and then look at the "cpu" column. If a program is running constantly at 50%(Except for the last one->"system idle process") or above then this also maybe a problem. I've had a problem with a printer install that would cause the computer to run slow and the fans would constantly run.

I'm not sure about the last suggestion. Even if a process is hogging the CPU, it shouldn't cause a shutdown. The fan will be on a lot, but the machine should stay up. You should be able to run a CPU burn-in program for hours without a crash.
