nx9005 problem

Hello there, needing some help with a friend's laptop.

I have never used a laptop for more than 5 minutes, so thought i'd seek advice.

Here's what happens when I try to boot up.

I boot the laptop with one of the silver buttons along the top.

Screen shows "press esc to change boot sequence/ F2 to enter setup"

1 Beep, then shuts down.

I have tried with Mains power with no luck, also.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Okay, first, are you sure it's just one (1) beep.

Second... was it a short beep or a long beep, also are there any codes post to screen when this/these beep/beeps occur?

Yes, definitely 1 short beep.

No codes are output to the screen.

Have you tried entering the setup before it turns off? Has he recently installed any new hardware or software? Has he recently dropped, or spilled anything into the machine?

Your 1 post beep is strange indeed, it would ordinarily signify your system is working perfectly then continue to boot, though that is not the case.

Some things to consider:

Reseat RAM modules
Reseat Hard Drive

If unit is running on AC, attempt to start on battery (and vice versa)

I've had a similar situation and the news is not good, I did have more post beeps though, but the end result was having the Motherboard replaced. The good news for me was the unit was still under warranty.

I've had lesser experiences that caused the unit to shut down (though again, had more post responses), Bad or improperly seated RAM modules, HD failure, power adapter and supply failure (causing irregular voltage spikes... particularly nasty).

At start up I press F2 and the screen stays on long enough to say

"Entering Setup" and then it switches off.

I tried reseatting the mem module, no change in results tho.

How'd I go about reseatting the HD?

I don't think my friend has used the laptop for a long time.

Well, been checking the Service Manual for the laptop and it seems to point towards a memory module failure.

The current module is 256MB, tried it in both slots.
Thing is, in the ^boot info^ 190M extended RAM passed

Is that the module showing up?

Why is it not showing as 256MB?

cheers

Sounds like its trying to start off a dead battery.. Verify adapter function first and the RAM issue? Its allocating memory for the video chipset....

ok, so I take the battery out, plug in the AC adapter = still switches off.

I went to see a guy in a computer shop, tells me that if it was a memory problem it would beep 3 times at POST, true?
