4080 review

Well, I spent the whole day looking out of the window waiting, and waiting, and it's finally arrived. My 4080 is here! The first web page (beyond windows update and msn, of course) to grace this laptop is this forum, as I just couldn't wait to come and say how wonderful this thing looks! The pictures you've seen of this laptop just don't do it justice, and the glossy sxga screen.... superb! From what I can tell, not a single dead pixel! The thing boots up so fast, and shuts down just as quickly! Tonight, I'll be testing the whole thing out, and I'll post my experiences with it in the morning perhaps, along with pictures. For those of you in the market to buy a sager, don't take this one off of your list just yet, as it's just as beastly as its bigger siblings. Also, the pictures of the laptop itself don't do it any justice. After seeing this thing for the first time in person, I'm in love. Now comes the praying that everything will run smoothly and faultless, and my baby won't have to leave my arms for repairs.

bananas to sager and pctorque!!!

I vote for the pics dude (says the man who *still* has to buy himself a digital camera and post them of his 8890).

Glad to see your machine arrived. Enjoy it.

ok here we go! Ran the lappy all night long, and I love it...

Specs are:
Penitum 4c @ 2.6 ghz
512 pc3200 (1x512)
60 gb 5400 rpm drive

I kept it simple, as most of the upgrades I can do myself. I also already have done the heatsink lapping mod, unfortunately i couldn't find my as3, so instead had to use a generic. Still I think it probably works better than that tin foil crap on there!

But it does get better. Look at that screen, and how beautiful it looks.

See the reflection of everything behind the laptop in the background of that picture. When they say glossy screen, they aren't kidding!

Finally, a few more pics of the laptop and my 3dmark2001 score. I don't believe in 3dmark2003 because of all of the contraversy around it, and the fact that it's been proven that processor speed is next to irrelevant. Here's my 3dmark score, stock clocks:

From what I can tell, this laptop is wonderful! It's so fast, it rivals my home computers in many ways! The keyboard does have a tendancy to get warm, but you just have to accept the wonderful with the tolerable.

P.S. That's my workplace in the background. I'm the graveyard shift manager at a 24 hour convenience store.

Ohh, can you give a brief description of swapping your thermal compound, ive been planning to do that on mine since i got it (with some AS Ceramique probably), but havent been sure how hard it would be. does the block that connects the heatpipes to the processor have a flat bottom or is the procssor recessed into it? any tips on springloaded screws sending themselves across the room/pieces dropping/etc.? thanks.

The screen looks beautiful, but doesn't all the glare bother you? I'm just wondering, cause I'm thinking about the 4080 as well, and I'm worried that the screen will be too glossy, and I'll be seeing the reflection of my room, instead of what's on the screen.

ive had almost no problems with glare on my screen, even when using it with a light source behind my head/in a room full of florescent panels/outdoors (only a few times). the slight problem with the screen is dirt and fingerprints are very noticible on the glossy surface, so ive begun carying one of those little cloths for cleaning glasses around in my laptop case for my screen.

What papp said. the glare's not so terrible, and it reminds me most of an actual crt monitor. IMO it also adds vibrance to whatever's being displayed. your other question, papp, the heatsink area is recessed under the screw mounting holes, but from previous experience I can tell you that a perfectly lapped surface vs one done half-a**ed is probably only going to yield about 1 degree difference, if that. I just felt better getting rid of their "tin foil heatsink compound." The screws, no worries, they won't actually fire off, or at least didn't with me. They should just about unscrew completely to the end of the springs. Hope that helps a bit.

I just bought mine yesterday, it will probably take a week to get here. I cant wait.
Mine was the 4080-V = 3Ghz but I upped the memory to 1GB! w00t! So it will be a huge jump from my crappy pc right now which is a p3 450hz with 192mb and g4 4200ti LOL lol!!! I can't wait!!! I want to test out the games it wouldnt run well on my current pc.

ah, news. The camera works great, unlike what people have said about it, and with 3dmark 2003 I get 2950 3dmarks. Just thought I would share this, and at some point I'll start overclocking this little beast!

Glad to hear that you're happy. Makes me sleep a little better knowing there's one more satisfied customer that went before me

how much does the 4080 weigh?

im debating whether or not I should get the 4080 or 8890...
also do you prefer the high contrast+glossy display over a normal active matrix lcd display?
rincewind,
The 4080 weighs in at about 7.5lbs without the brick.

As for the screen, I love it. It is much better than many of the other LCD's I've seen on display at the local CompUSA. I just recently took a look at the sony X-brite and I think is comparable to that screen (at least at a cursory glance). Only problem is the glare on the screen. I like it so much that I find it hard going back to my larger non-glossy LCD that I use with my desktop.

I'd don't play a lot of games so I can't comment on how well it works for gamming, but I have played DF2 and Halo and they both look and work well on my 4080.

thanks for the fast response

i dont think im getting an 8890 anymore... its kinda expensive
and its heavy, it weighs 13 pounds...

im debating between a 5680 and 4080 now

the 5680 is kinda appealing coz it has room for 2 batteries at once... meaning prolly a 2hr life b4 needing to charge... thats sweet for this kind of power. however, the aesthetics look yuck. that blue wrist pad plate thing is awful

i like the standard color scheme of the 4080...
