If you want "common" names like Dell, Sony, Compaq, Packard Bell/HP, Toshiba, etc then go for them. Alienware is unique, not a lot of people have them, you're sure to stand out as well as having a very good looking laptop + a very powerful one.
I felt the same as you did 4 days ago before I ordered mine. But eventually I just brought it, and to be honest, reading all the comments around here, it actually is worth it.
Another way to look at it ; do you really need a POWERFUL laptop? If you only need it to work on [word process, database/spreadsheets], check a few e-mails and surf the web, an AW isn't really needed.
I don't know how old you are, but it's like with buying a car. Most people I know seem to opt for FASTER cars. Is THAT really needed? You cannot drive fast on todays roads anyways without getting 20 cop cars trying corner your ass down. It's the same with anything else in this argument, expensive clothes or normal clothes/shoes? McDonalds or some high reptutation food restaurant?

I am a new alienware owner, let me tell you that it is worth it. I always wanted an alienware computer but didn't think I could own one. Yes $3,000 is a lot of money. But for a desktop replacement laptop it is very reasonable. Not to mention the waranty and the other options you get. I looked everywhere before ordering mine making sure that I got a good deal. I need a powerful laptop, I looked at voodoo that was a grand or more expensive that the alienware. I even looked a sager but you get so much less than alienware. It all depends on how capable you want a laptop to be. I have owned a dell computer, not a laptop mind you but I was completly dissatified with its mediocrity performance.
In this months computer shopper it list a bunch of desktop replacements. They are $500 dollers less then what I paid and it only had 512 ram, 5400 hardrive, and P4 2.4 proccessor. The dell even listed a P4m chip. They listed one computer who was almost up to par with Alienware but was over $650 more than alienware. Key word in last sentence was ALMOST. To make the point short: "If you want a lot of power for the price I believe Alienware is your best bet, they match INCREDIBLE power with good craftmanship.
