Linux Distro for noob. - Page 2

If you like KDE, you might want to give SimplyMepis a try. I think it meets your stated requirements, and since it's recent release was a couple of weeks ago, it should have good hardware compatibility (not to bad on my Acer 8204, which was challenging to a couple of other distros I've tried to install). http://www.mepis.org/

Mepis did not work for me. To do a very simple thing like chaning my resolution, I had to do some xorg.conf editing which i nered did cause I would might have mess it up. Also to change the resolution to higher then what the default one is, you will need to knwo your monitor model and all that crap. So Mepis was no go.

PClinuxOS had no problems with that.. And feels much netter then Mepis.

dont know if i agree. i ran mepis on my desktop quite fine for about 1/2 year, very stable, very efficient, and it was very easy to get everything working (actually everything but nvidia worked out of the box, which was an easy fix).

that said, pclinuxos is so much sweeter on my laptop (mepis was hell on my lappy). I think overall PCLOS is more responsive and probably has a better overall layout, but i wouldn't necesseraly say that pclos is better than mepis period, end of story.

Well I like most first person shooters, I have native Quake1,2,3 , RTCW, SOF, Unreal series, AlphaCetuari, HoMM, Tux Racer, etc. but still no where near my MS collection. So I keep dual boot alive. Someday I will get rid of it but I fear it maybe OSX86 that works best-first and it is not availible for purchase.

Also found something about SuSE originally being a unix company and german translation of Slackware.
I've read that SuSE was based on Jurix (now defunct) and Slackware. Can't remember where.

I am back to windows. After all the fights I had with linux, I think it is just not readyfor new users who just want to use it for basic stuff.

There are hardware problems and it is sometimes very hard and time consuming to get your stuff working and it is just not time efficient.

I'll wait it out when Linux will be better made and simpler for newer users.

eh. you had your angle, i have mine.

i actually find myself to be more productive in linux than windows. that is, after the initial configuration. the fact here is that i simply know how to get stuff done (or at least the basics of it). n00bery starts somewhere.

that is, you've been a win user, if somebody gave you macos or beos rightnow, you'd still be scared and you'd still have the same outcome "i am gonna wait for macos or beos to get better and more user friendly" however to those who are used to it, windows seems like the wilderness (which i admit sometimes windows can be a zoo).

My main problem with linux so far has been getting to grips with installing software- especially since I'm not necessarily always using my own machine, and i like being able to download apps onto a key for installing later- still haven't worke dout how to do that. Tried the linux mags- couldn't work out how to install the software from there, either!!! however, will try pcos one.

Anyone tried ReactOS? Personally, once it's capable of wi fi and full usb plug and play, i may well migrate to that. Best bit is that it runs any win prog natively- no need to install a WINE type app.

ReactOS is a pipe dream. wont be ready for a while.

linux is the shiznit.

personally i find debian's APT and Gentoo's Portage the best ways to install files EVER. PERIOD!

I love PCLinuxOS I have tried so many other distros but always end up back with it! Texstar does an excellent job with it. I can't wait for the next version as each one has been a huge improvement. I started with .7 and am loving .92. I am amazed how something based on Mandriva (Mandrake) which is based on Fedora (Red Hat) could end up being so good, useful, polished. Any one who gets it running will like it . Maybe not keep it but will like it!
