Suggestion to Sager for replacing MP3.

I, and apparently many others here, have no interest in the MP3 device for the 8887. What I was thinking was that the slot left open by not ordering it could be utilized by another device designed to use that slot. What I would find of more value would be a flash memory reader that would fit in the same place. Something similar to the item in this link.

Obviously, this device itself could not be used, but a modified type of set-up might be of interest to several people. What do you think?

You would have to talk to Clevo for something custom like that. I mean, how are you going to get specifications and technical data, let alone make it yourself? I got the MP3 player simply because it serves as a very nice memory card reader, which complements the sony memory stick slot. Good luck though.

Cheers.

How about a Pocket PC PDA or a GPS module for the road?

Just my 2 cents.

I don't have my 8887 yet, but I'm pretty sure it's not something standard. I mean, I doubt they just put a USB port in there.

Cheers.

It was just a thought, but I felt that the slot could be valuable for other devices as well as the MP3 player. I didn't know whether or not you could use the SD card in the player for things other than what it was intended for. A friend of mine recently bought the Toshiba Satellite 5205-S703. It uses a MP3 player also, but he can't get it to work like a drive as well. I just figured it might work the same way in the Sager. I have several cameras and other devices that use various different flash memory media and thought that the variety might be valuable to others as well. I like the gps idea too.

Get rid of the MP3!!!

I could think of a lot of things i'd like in there instead of the MP3 player...

1] Extra Battery - sure its too big but you could if your removed the MP3's connecting bay, housing and all that unnecessary hardware...

2] PDA - sounds stupid when you have a laptop at hand but wouldnt it be cool to have a Palm Pilot stuck into your laptop??

3] Combat knife and AK 47 ha ha - just to add some more realism to your games

4] Maybe a better sound card, tv tuner, speakers...this could be worth looking at IMO

One of the reviews referenced in the 3rd Party Reviews thread said that the SD card in the MP3 in the 8886 shows up as another hard drive and can be used to transfer files other than MP3's.

gsferrari,

Why would the PDA be stupid (BTW a Palm Pilot is essentially a PDA - personal digital assistant), but another TV card would do it?

Don't quiet get your reasoning. You rather equip your 8886/7 with another TV card/ sound card than with something that actually makes your Notebook more portable or adds more features.

Sorry, man, no hard feelings I hope.

You could probably use that space to adapt the mobo and make it desktop ram compatible
THAT would be sweet

or you could do what i plan on doing. placing a pack of big red in the empty slot for when you need it. it looks gooood on you.

haha, I think the mp3 is fine; people who want it can get it, and people who don't want it ... will have to come to PCTorque to get the option. I think sager should make it optional.

The mp3 player is fine, but I think the biggest downer is the battery life. Maybe, improve it instead of replace it.

what to fit in there

perhaps put a pure memory reader module, instead of an mp3 playing one. We already have a memory stick slot, so perhaps a module that reads XD memory, SD memory, & CompactFlash cards. perhaps having the XD and SD slots beside each other on top, with the CF below them

I'd like to stick an extra Xeon processor in there... Who knows, hot-swappable CPUs?

Cheers.
