Plz help-7800 PowerMizer and hot GPU Whats wrong?

Thread Starter
Hi,
my 7800 go is going very hot.

I´ve underclocking my card at the 2D Modus and undervolting with the powerMizer option and my card is very hot. Look at the pics.

Whats wrong there and why ist my card so hot in the 2D Modus???

Installed driver is Laptopvideo2go, 83.60 and coolbits2.

Chances are the Powermizer is letting the gpu get warmer to avoid turning on the fan as often. Fan on = more current draw, sucking battery power.

No matter how low you set your Core and Memory clocks, your GPU will generate heat.

BTW, my GPU also hits around 80*C before the fans kick on. I don't think it's going to hurt the card any.

Those temps are way high. The XPS M170 with 7800GTX idles at 40-50C and maxes out at 80-90C, and the clocks are much higher.

There's either something wrong with the GPU cooling solution, fan control, or temperature sensor if you guys are seeing these temps.

I am having the same problems. My gpu tempature are very high in idle mode, I have even underclock my gpu to the extreme. Please help. thanks

Yeah, Dellbert, this is aggravating the crap out of me and not knowing the answer/solution is even worse. I want to send my lappy back, I think I have one more day.

I am having the same problem. My GPU gets to 82* on the desktop before the fans kick in. Once the fans cut off, the tempquickly rises again.

I use the original i8kfangui on my 9300, and it keeps the 6800 GPU temp below 50C on idle. You might try it:

Using I9Kfangui is good, but I am very concern about the problem with such high temp while in idle mode. I hope either dell or nvidia fixes this problem.

What GPU idle temps are you guys seeing when using i9kfangui? Can the fan keep the temp under 50C?
With no fans turn on, on ac adapter, is about 79-80C ( think, can't for sure varify). On battery, I just checked, my gpu is at 80C with no fans turn on.

i9kfangui does a great job of keeping my GPU temps in an acceptable range. (in the 60s), but I don't know what the acceptable temperature range is for my Core Duo CPU, and fangui also takes control of the CPU fans. If I could find that information, I would be set.

One other thing, others are reporting no problems with high GPU temps. It seems that some of us have gotten hotter GPUs. I will be applying as5 to see if it helps.

My Pentium-M ranges from about 30C-40C, and supposedly the core duo runs even cooler.

Are you saying that your GPU idles at 60C+ even with fans on? That still sounds warm to me. I plan to use this thing on my lap....

I read your other posts. So, you're only having a problem with 2D mode? That's really odd. The only operation that really uses the GPU during web surfing is scrolling.

You might try monitoring your temps with RivaTuner (or something else that will give you a historical graph of temps), and run something like PCMark04 that has a scrolling benchmark test just to confirm that scrolling is causing the heat.

I doubt that it's a driver issue. More likely a heatsink issue.

The main problem is in 2D mode. It isn't just scrolling or web browsing that causes it, it happens even when you just let it sit at the desktop without doing anything. The fans aren't kicking in in 2D mode until 82* for some reason. Once you go into the 3D environment, the fans keep the temp around 70-75* or so.

All these probs are in 2d mode. In 3d the fan kicks in at 80 odd and stays on.

I9k is on, but the idle temps are still in the 60's. I9k is on, BUT steps down the fan speed to low. If it stayed higher, it would be ok.

Just checking the temperature
59C right now
and after playing F.E.A.R. only 65C
Powermizer gives me 100%

And the only thing I did was upgrade the nvidea driver, no OC, no extra tools like i9 or what so ever

so it was the drivers?

Which drivers did you use and by who?

Thanks!

Version I used was the latest one 83.90
downloaded on laptopvideo2go

It gave a nice speed upgrade. But if it has something to do with the heat, no idea. But that's up to you, with hot GPU's, to test.

Also important is the OC of course. The more, the hotter. But for me, as long as I don't need it, I won't OC. I can play FEAR on 1400x??? or something. It wouldn't take the 1920x1200. But even so, very good details and no lags what so ever.

So please try it out. If this helps and fan is better controlled with the latest update, it's good for everybody. And we avoid a lot of threads of people complaining, wining about their hot GPU.

Happy testing
Lemke
