End of the line for the GTX - Page 2

I wouldn't even think twice about this until it comes from a reliable source. The Inquirer is a load of B.S., all they do is speculate and start rumors.

The average life of the "latest and greatest" video card is only about 4 months, and the 7800 was released in what, November? I highly doubt nVidia will wait till Fall/Winter to release their next card. I'd put money on it that they release a new one before Spring.

Yah but I'll bet if it is true those Dell B@stards would order 7900s that wouldn't fit into our M170s. They think that just cuz they have a corner on the high end laptops that they can use graphics cards as leverage to make us buy new systems more often than should be nessesary.

How long was the 6800 Go Ultra on top? It was a lot longer then 4 months. Of course the desktop cards are being cranked out like no tomorrow, but since Dell just released the 9400/170 w/ the 7800 versions I can't see a redesign like that so soon.

Well... the article is talking about desktop products, so I'd imagine they'd continue to make the Go versions for a while now. There needs to be some stock of replacement cards. Dell is selling how many thousands of laptops with Go7800GTX's? And if the supply dries up before the new Go7x00 comes out, will they revert back to 6800Ultras or 7800 (vanilla)s in their new M170 orders?

well look at the ati 1800 series that last all of a handful of months!! To be honest the 7800 was designed so it could be easily changed to become a mobile GPU, i do believe Nvidia will continue that trend. However the worrying thing some believe that the 7900 will be nothing more than a 90 nanometre version of the 7800 with higher clock speed. They also say that it wont be faster that the ati 1900xtx. Now i know everyone has there person opinon however i do believe the inqirer as a reliable source, because all the information they printed prior to the release of the 7800gtx and the ati 1800/1900 have all proved to very true. I guess time will tell but really makes you think about where the world of mobile gaming is going! P.S M170 RULES!!!!

I just hope 7900 go fits in our 9300/XPS

WTF are u guys so worried about? When FEAR 2 or Half-Life 3 comes out, yeah, maybe I'll start worrying about it, but until then, I can barely tax my machine as it is with current software (ok, maybe FEAR just a teeny bit). You guys are a bunch of model number whores.

The only real problem is like what some of you mentioned, if they actually STOP producing the Geforce GO 7800GTX and not come out with a replacement for the XPS2.

To each his own I guess.

Half Life 3 ???? WHAT WHERE WHEN ????

LMAO got me a little excited there.

The GTX was introduced in September. I'd take your bet. I do not think there will be another nVidia laptop card that will best the GTX until June at least.

i wonder if it will run on direct 10x. So i can play Crisis when it comes out.

When Nvidia makes an order for silicon, that does not mean they get delivery in two weeks and two weeks later all their chips are out the door to board makers and a week later all the chips are in retail channels. These things take time. Months. Not only that, but they can make a single order with multiple delivery dates.

They are so full of it, Why would you guys believe them, Hell they just released the 7800 gs AGP a couple weeks ago.

And that will probably be the best AGP card ever to come out again...

I don't really think that that has any indication that they are not discontinuing the 7800.

any thoughts on direct 10x for laptops?

*ahem* The 20" Portable XPS demo'd at CES was more of a gimmick than anything. XPS M170's are actually usable as a mobile system... while that 20" thing is more of a lanboy fantasy. I would expect Dell to stick with a 17" chassis for the next XPS laptop. And until a new top-end Go card is available (hopefully not an ATI) Dell will hold off on even planning the next XPS system.

Remember, that 20" thing used the same 7800GTX Go card that many of us are enjoying in our 9300's... it's not using higher tech then what is already available (other than that mobile-unfriendly 20" screen). So what would be the point of releasing a bigger system and bigger screen... but the same cpu/gpu that is about to be phased out?

I would bet on another 17" XPS and an upgrade path for the M170 in terms of gpu. Dell likes interchangable parts... even from generation to generation. This allows them to utilize existing inventory for Spare Parts when the next Generation systems come out every year or two.

i hope the 7900 go gtx will be available for us, at a nice price like it was the 7800 go gtx
