4750 (D470K) & Corsair Memory upgrade ???

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I was wondering if anyone knows if there's an advantage of upgrading my 2GB CAS 3.0 Apacer memory to Corsair, more specifically this one:

2x "Corsair VS1GSDS400 1GB PC3200 DDR SoDIMM Memory"

A co-worker of mine needs two Gigs on his HP... and he offered to take my RAM. Now, I noticed that my ram is lowered to 166Mhz if more than one (1) GB is installed. The CAS rating at 166 is 2.5 and at 200 would be 3.

If I get a Corsair pair of 1GB SoDIMMs, will it:

1- Be 100% compatible ?? Some HP notebooks will not even boot with CAS 2.0 RAM. Will The Sager 4750 (Clevo D470K)?
2- Be able to run at a rated lower CAS ?
3- Be more stable ?
4- Run at full 200Mhz with 2GB installed ?

I would apreciate any feedback anyone may have. I have to give my counterpart an answer in a couple of days. If the corsair memory works then I'll give him my RAM and order new one for my 4750.

Best regards;

I've replaced 3 month ago 2x256 Twin Mos 333Mhz modules on my
Clevo D470K (identical with 4750)
with 1 Corsair VS1GSDS400 module. On Your question 1) the answer
is positive. As to question 3: I can not compare with Apacer memory,
but Corsair turned out to be much more stable than Twin Mos.
In fact Twin Mos was very unstable at high temps, causing BSOD's on
my laptop 1-3 times a day. With Corsair there was not a single BSOD
observed during these 3 month.
OK, I've changed as well the stupid Medion
BIOS causing the overheating of my laptop, with Sager BIOS and
KBD firmware ver.S2, but at least 10 days Corsair was running on
overheated laptop with Medion BIOS, with no BSOD's occuring during
this time.

Having only one 1G module I can not answer question 4.

By the way SPD timings of VS1GSDS400 at 200 Mh are 3-3-3-8,
so that CAS is 3.0 at this frequence; 2.5 is only possible at 166Mh.
Nevertheless Sandra test shows better results for this Corsair module
than for some "generic" CAS 2.5 modules.

And You are to know as well that Corsair often sells other manufecturer's
modules under its own label: my "Corsair" module was, in fact, produced by
Infineon.

Thanks Vlad;

I am going to order the Corsair RAM modules. Even if the overall experience will not improve (my machine has been rock stable up to now) at least the memory will hold its own on quality alone better than the Apacer.

On a side note: My original apacer 2GB RAM modules report the same timings as your Corsair. So things can only get better - at least I know Corsair's has more headroom.
