Inspiron 8500 Running at Half Clock Speed

Hey all,

I'm running i8kfanGUI, and I noticed that my CPU is currently running at 1.2 GHz. The processor is supposed to be at 2.4 GHz...the system even says that the max speed is 2.4 GHz. Why is it running at half, and how can I bump it up to full speed?

I'm running off of AC power, so I don't know if its a power issue or not.

Thanks!

Could be a quickset thingy.? Try fiddling arround with the options.

Just got Quickset running...and it's not bumping the CPU speed up . Got any other suggestions?

Its still a screwy intel speedstep issue.

Go download a utility called Notebook Hardware Control from
http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm

Install that and set ac to maximum and dc to dynamic switching.

You should be good to go after that.

The CPU's running at normal clock speed now. Thanks a bunch, guys!

Now if only I could get the rest of the problems on this laptop fixed...

What did you do to correct the problem. I have the same problem but the area with the CPU setting are not acessible.

Thanks

my clock speed is also lower. But i think its because it automaticaly lowers the volts to the CPU to save power when its not needed. Perhaps this is one of the reasons it uses such little battery power.

^^^ That's right, the speed throttles up as required depending upon the applications running. Its a battery saving feature called Speedstep.

This battery saving feature called Speedstep does it work only with the battery or with the AC plug in also.

Theres a driver update for speedstep on Dells download site.

Hi

My partners inspiron 8500 is doing the same and her getting narky prompted me to look into problem and im 99% sure ive just solved it. The  people who resolved it with speedstep and so on merely needed to alter some settings in power management to prevent it from doing the job it was designed for(thats all the various downloads do for you so no need really). As for the countless people who this does not work for (over the past 9 years).Look at your power pack and if as in maybe this case(on slower laptop) im sure it will say 65w this is the problem so order a new power supply with a higher wattage as cpu cant run at full capacity on this supply.
