Asus L3500D XPM 2.5 - fan problem

Hi there,

hope anyone can help me out. I usually work with an Apple iBook which fan you never get to hear, even in heavy duty. Bought my girlfriend an Asus L3500D with Athlon XPM 2.5 etc. and the Asus' fan noise gives me the creeps.

Asus Probe, a CPU monitoring software, tells me the CPU is running at 120 Fahrenheit. The fan seems to run at 3500 RPM and I guess that's not really ok.

Can someone please help me cutting down the noise ? Running Windows XP, installed all Asus drivers (also an ACPI package).

Thanks !

You can try one of those laptop cooling pads and see if that helps, but beyond that, there is basically nothing that can be done. On another note, I know a guy with a PowerBook G3... the CPU temp is normally >60*C idle, and the fan doesn't turn on until it hits like 90*C. Apparently Asus simply knows how to properly design a laptop, which Apple (again, apparently) doesn't.

I really cannot believe that at 120 F the fan needs to run at 3500 RPM which seems to be max speed. Read about a guy who said after installing an ACPI able OS his Asus fan slowed down. Doesn't work for me though.

Cannot speak for the Powerbook but my Ibook case doesn't even get more than warm in heavy duty This is the first comp hardware I've ever really liked but I didn't want to start an Apple vs. PC discussion here, looking for help. Guess I'll send the laptop back to the store.
