well looks like using a linux live cd worked like a charm....i am using Knoppix to download all the files off the bad drive onto a new one in an external usb enclosure....thanks for the help!!!

PS - windows f---ing sucks at recovering stuff....managed to do it in 5 min with linux after a week of trying windows solutions and ideas. from now on, i am ALWAYS keeping a linux boot disk with all sorts of utilities.

What did I tell you? linux is very good with working with drives with bad sectores/corupted filesystems.

alot like a tivo, except a fully functional computer running linux, using the opensource software mythtv:

works very good, and I get best possible quality, the only analog conversion is done by the TV when it converts a digital signal to be displayed the the projector.

everything is digital, and no recompression, direct mpeg2 from the sat, and direct mpeg2 from the HDTV via antenna. So absolutey best possible quality, and digital out through DVI-D to the DLP HDTV. quite a nice setup if I do say so myself =)

The other day it recorded the winter olympics in 1080i, like 5 hours or something, around 34 GB, biggest recording ive ever had heh.
