Area 51m "15.4"

I thought I'd try and get someone's opinion on this one. I ordered my A51m with the 15.4" screen, but now that I have seen an actual pic of it I'm starting to have my doubts. As of right now I am currently on Phase 6 (which took forever). If I decided to change my order, I know it's gonna delay my order a bit. I guess what I'm asking is if there is anyone with a A51m and a 15.4" screen please give some description on how games and movies look. Pics would also be nice.

I have my doubts too after seeing the pic of it. But if you think about it, it's only a bit smaller, do you really need a bigger screen anyway? Ok it might look weird, but still ... you save quite a lot opting for a 15.4 one ...

the 16.1 which I have is VERY nice looking and worth it. I was asking myself that same question. I was going to get the 15.4 and save all that extra money and put it into RAM and stuff but I was looking at pictures and didnt like how it looked and Im gald I opted for the 16.1. Since Im going to have this computer for next to 3 years it pays for its self...I think

4 Speakers though, but none the less, it kicks the ass out of anyone who dares to compete with you. 4 Speakers + Widescreen = owns almost anything other thing anyway. ^___^

I love my 15.4" screen, but when I started looking at laptops I knew that I wanted a wide screen. As far as size difference goes the overall difference in the number of pixels between the 16.1" and the 15.4" is only about 8%, so you are not losing that much with the smaller screen even though the 15.4" looks a lot smaller. Also it is cheaper, but that should not be a factor since $400 dollars is not that much in the long run. As for the screen quality, it is bright and sharp with huge viewing angles. I play BF1942 a lot and it is great with that game. I have notice that the picture get a little stretched in some games that do not support wide screen format. Not that big a deal for me though. The extra speakers are nice especially with the 4-speaker surround sound effect on. You will not be disappointed with either screen from the user comments that I have read on this site.

I opted for the 15.4, 4 speakers sound good to me, I could turn my thing on very loud just to annoy everyone in the room and overpower them with noise , even though I ain't got it yet, I could see myself doing it .....

So you actually use the laptop speakers on a regular basis? I feel that they just cant beat, or be as loud as and external self-powered speakers. I’d rather let my trusty pair of Labtecs to pump out the audio since these tiny laptop speakers could barely pump out the bass.

Well Marcellus, it’s a good idea to make up your mind now then before its too late. For me, I prefer the extra real-estate with the 16.1” screen, which would not be an option to change later on if you change your mind. But also, you could use the widescreen on the laptop, plus have a regular monitor or LCD so you could have the ‘best of both worlds.’

Yup, my first order was with the 15.4 LCD, Orderd mine on 12/22/03. i saw a pic of it i almost fell off my chair! i was on phase 4 on the 15.4. so i called alienware and changed it to 16.1 on 1/2/04 and now im on phase 5.

Interesting...I went for the 15.4'' screen because I thought it was a better quality screen than the 16'' -- (from info off this forum). The viewing angles are better and widescreen can't be beat for what I intend to use the laptop for -- web application development which involves a lot of floating pallet style apps, i.e Visual Studio.NET, Dreamweaver and Flash MX.

The aspect ratio is 6:10, so almost true widescreen...but I can see why you gamers might not want that.

Can anyone who has the 15.4'' relate their experience as to overall quality and view angles?

How badly does the image get distorted on the 15.4" screen? Also, do most games support it, or do most get stretched? I havnt had any experience with widescreens.

The 16.1 inch display appears quite a bit larger than the math might make it seem to be. My 16 inch display is absolutely stunning. Any issues with wash out and stuff are related to driver issues. A little tweaking here and there and your display is awesome. IMHO the 15.4 inch display simply looks awkward and out of place in the 16 inch case design. If perhaps AW had made a 15 inch case like the Dell widescreen maybe it would look different.

As it is now the 15.4 inch is not so much a "widescreen" as it is a "shortscreen"

Thats what I noticed. The 15.4" is almost exactly the same width as the 16.1", its only a bit shorter to make room for the speakers. My concern is how well it plays games. Ive had almost no experience with widescreen displays and id like to know if they will play games ok, or if they will distort the picture. Do most (new and old) games support the display size, or do they get stretched?

Think its best to go to a local computer store and take a look at the size yourself, in pictures the 16.1 looks SO much better and the 15.4 looks not as great but in real life I saw a few widescreen 15.4's and it seems large enough....... although if you have the cash 16.1 is pretty sweet

every one i know personaly who has an alienwar has the 15.4 and they dont look nearly as bad as the pictures make them out to be in my opinion
post #16 of 57
I like my 15.4.
Thats good news because mine will (hopefully) be here within the week (Phase 13). Im glad to hear they arn't as bad as the pics make 'em.
I just looked at some more pics of the two sizes and now i see why everyone is saying the 15" looks smaller. some of the pics are really deceving. It does look smaller in comparison when you dont see them side by side. If there was a pic of both sizes together, i think it would show that the 15.4" really isnt to bad looking. Although... the 16.1" does look really sweet. If only i had an extra 400 bucks layin' around. OH well.

PS: also, could someone post the actual width and height of the two screens in inches. thanx

Is there a link on this website of the 15.4 inch screen and if not, can someone give me a link of where they saw these 15.4 pictures.
Thanks

It would be nice if alienware had pics of both screens so buyers will know what to expect when they order.
