Im fairly sure the model your refering to is the 5672 which has a x1400 not a 1600, The 1400 gets around 1900 in 3dmark05, the x700 can get around 2800 nd the x1600 just blows everything else away.

Ya 5672, saw the pics in the Acer gallery - wow.

Now when I think of it, toshiba freakin put the air vent on the bottom of the laptop, gee is that ever smart, no wonder its overheating

Hey, tell me one thing. How come mine hasn't overheated in five months, with the same 'vent on the bottom' design?

The problem isn't the computer.

Do you block the air intake/vents? Do you place the laptop on a bed/sofa/carpet?

Good point, I've never done that; might be why mine's fine.

My comp's always on a flat surface which allows airflow, and if it is in my lap, which doesn't happen often, I make sure the vent is uncovered and unobstructed.

He also said reformmating wont do anything, even though i was hit with a virus last week. He said if i ran a scan on it and was able to delete the file, then it means im not affected. He also said, if it was the virus that it would happen more often and sooner, not in 12hrs every week or so. Does he have a point here?
Updating the BIOS has the most potential to resolve this problem I think. If the system's power management is not working properly, this may resolve the issue.

I doubt this was caused by a virus, but its possible. New viruses pop up all the time and its possible that if you were infected by one, you could still be infected by another that is not currently addressed by your antivirus definition files.

What was happening on your system when it overheated? Where was it? As others have mentioned, having the system's vents blocked, even partially, can cause serious problems for some systems. If your system sat there for 12 hours and completely randomly shutdown...thats pretty odd. By default, this system should be dropping the CPU speed when its not in demand and probably turns off the hard drive after a period of time, even while plugged in.

Nope, on glass desk, nothing blocking. I even checked the fan last night to make sure it wasnt clogged and air seemed to be blowing out just fine.

My bios surprisingly was already up to date rigt out of the box...couldnt do anything to it.

I was hit with a sasser virus last week and though I was able to delete the file, after scanning in safe mode, im not sure if im still infected. The toshiba tech guy said that even if it was a virus, it wouldnt be happening so occasionally, and much more often. I find what gives it away that its overheating, is the fact that the fans were going off like mad prior to shutting down. And this happened all 3 times, being on at around 12hrs. I think that gives it away right there.

Everytime this happened I was just using it on my desk like usual and using windows. Web, email, mp3, nothing intensive like a DVD or game.

But either way, im most likely not going to risk this by keeping it and have it happen again, so im going to change it in about half hour here to get another model.

Sorry man but at this point, your track record speaks for itself. All one has to do is search your threads to see the fact that every computer you touch goes to hell. It's hard to believe that you somehow have the unfortunate luck of acquiring every lemon Toshiba ever made while we all have great computers.

well i dont know what to say TLP. I guess toshiba just aint for me. ive never had such bad luck with a company before.

I dont want to get another toshiba ever again and even worse pay more $, but looks like the P100 is the only choice rght now. Im so stuck on the 17'', so unless im willing to settle for an HP
post #34 of 69
I don't know why you went for another one after the last, with which you had so many issues, apparently. bad judgement call on your part, I'd say. Don't do it again. I'm sure many people will agree that these threads are getting very redundant.

I don't even know why you bought another toshiba after all the problems you had with your first one, regardless of if you got a deal.

and second, wen will you get this, there are many many many many many 17" models. you don't H A V E to get an hp, or settle for 15.4"

Looks like ill have to settle for toshia again. jk. Or ill go HP.

Please, spare us and Toshiba the moaning, and don't get another one of those.
