Inspiron 9300 LED Mod.... WORKED

OK.. so not exactly, but here is what happened.

Yesterday my 2yo knocked my Inspiron 9300 off the tray table so I told my wife he broke it and it needed a new motherboard.

So.. off to dell parts I go. They wanted $250 for the Inspiron motherboard, OK not bad.. So I ask, now.. how much for the XPS Gen2? $323 she sais. Hey, thats not much more. So I continue.. How much for the System fan (27.95, and the Graphix fan (25.95). Hum.. Still cheeper then the XPS Gen2 motherboard on ebay. So I ask her one more thing.. How much for the XPS Gen 2 speakers 33.95 she sais. OK Lets order all of that.

Grand total.

423.80 with 2nd day shipping. Still cheeper then the XPS Gen2 Motherboard on eBay right now for $475.

So, lets see.. By Friday I should have successfully turned my i9300 in to a Inspiron XPS Gen2 with working Fan and Speaker LEDS... And my GeForce 7800GTX will actualy be in a real Gen2 and not a 9300 which was BIOS flashed to turn it in to a Gen2.

I will let everyone know how well it works out and post some pictures.

Since I didn't order the i9300 motherboard I don't know the part number. Thoes part numbers were from my order status from dell.

I see for $150 there is a XPS cover complete with the LED's and the Antenna on eBay as well, but I figure mine will be unique.

When I am doing the swap I will see about taking some good pictures of the missing components and see if it is as easy as putting in a few chips, connectors, etc.

This will make it the 5th time I have opened the thing up.. I might need some new thread lock for all my screws.

Wouldn't the fans from the 9300 mobo work on the XPS2 one or are they different also?
9300 and XPS2 motherboards are identical with the exception of the XPS2 having a gigabit ethernet nic and led connections with a few capacitors near the led hookups. Thats why the bios is interchangeable.

this is a great idea OPer. excellent thinking.

just replaced the i6000 mobo. what a arse pain (:

you can't use the XPS fans on the I9300 because the controller for the lights are not on the 9300 MB I had a thread going about it and we did some real investigating
post #13 of 87
heh, might as well go all out and get a xps case, no?

I did not want to get the case cause of the stelth factor. No need to broadcast that I have an XPS laptop.

I don't know if the fans would work because of the LED hookups. I believe the connector uses 6 wires 3 for the fan and 3 for the LED's

Same goes for the front speakers the XPS has the LED hookups.

Hence the whole reason for doing this is I want the pretty lights. That and my current motherboard has a bad power supply connector thanks to my 2yo little boy.

OK.. So dell screwed me and only sent me the motherboard. So, we are going to have to wait a while for pictures since I am leaving for Flordia on Wednesday for a little vacation.

I will hopefully get right on this when I return so I have some nice pictures to show you all.

what is the fan? i thought other then the lights a 9300 with the GTX is the exact same as the m170.no?

Venom, the front speakers, rear fans, and LCD rear cover contain the LED's inside of them with wires that plug into the motherboard. He wants the bling, not the paint job.

While upgrading the graphics card in my XPS I took the fans out to clean them. The fan connector is a 3 pin. The LEDs are on a small board screwed on top of the fan and have a seperate cable going to the 6pin connector.
