M5500 won't turn on brand new

Hi,
I just got my computer yesterday and it I plugged it in while I was gone so the battery could start charging (didn't turn it on for at least four hours) so when I got home later last night I turned the comp on for the first time (was still plugged in with a/c adapter so as not to interrupt the battery's first time charge) and everything worked fine... I installed microsoft works suite and set some of my preferences and things... then turned it off after about two hours and went to bed. so today I came home during my lunch break, the computer still having been plugged in since the night before, and turned it on. After about 10-20 minutes of being on I get the battery low warning??? so I checked to make sure it's still plugged in, yes it is, but the little green light on the a/c adapter was not on. So i tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, still nothing. I take it to a new outlet, nothing. I have shut down the computer by this time by the way. So I unplugged the a/c adapter from teh computer and took it to try another outlet. This time the green light came on so I brought the notebook in there and plugged it in. I pushed the power button and it started to come on but immediately the green light on the a/c adapter went off and the notebook failed to turn on. I tried this several times... long story short, I spent an hour and half on the phone with tech support, they had me take out the mother board and the memory and try turning it on... ( I am a woman, I only know how to use the computer not put it together!) it didn't work... I've got a new a/c adapter being sent to me... but the thing worked last night so I don't know if thats the problem? has this ever happened to anyone else or does anyone know what might be wrong/ this is my first laptop so I don't know much about it, I am really upset that my first day with my computer it isn't working....

thanks in advance,
Krista

Holy crap, thats horrible. I hope what they are sending you will fix your problem. I can assure you that I haven't come across that before with my system, But I'm pretty sure a problem like that has happened before on here and was fixed.

Is the plug socket turned on...

Hey I have had it happen before.

sounds like the power supply went bad. once you receive the new power supply, everything should be back to normal.

power supplys do go bad, hopefully you'll have better luck on your next one!

whoa, I feel for you !!!! You should not had to wait for the charge. They seem to come factory charged. I plugged mine in and charge went good in about 15 mins. (although I had other problems that forced me to send mine back in (optical bay trouble) ) check the pins on the power supply cable, see if any are bent. Also maybe the plug did not seat properly that one time. I'd use it as much as possible and see if the problems re-occur. Hell, maybe you even had a power failure in your area, if the power is interrupted for any reason the battery can in some systems back-drain into the transformer.

PS: I ordered two of the power supplies just so I could be backed up in your kind of senerio. I kind of have a 'nasa' style of approach to my system. Two of everything that I could two HD (raid 1), two opticals, two sound cards, two power supplies..... I still had trouble but I worked out of the box.

thanks for feeling my pain with me lol

believe me it wasn't any fun taking the back off the computer and well... doing stuff that I would definitely rather not do with the insides of my computer!!! Why couldn't I have just taken it out of the box and it have not had any problems til like five years from now???

I could barely understand the tech I had to talk to ... he had an accent, which I have nothing against that except he was hard to understand I was soooo excited to get my new computer!

I know that a power outage didn't cause it because it was plugged into a powerstrip that has a surge protector... and when I turned on the computer after it having been plugged in for over 12 hours the battery was almost dead after less than 10 min. so something is not right here! I just wish I didn't have to wait for the a/d adapter to ship here... I want my computer NOW! lol

adonia: what has Alienware suggested? I know it sucks, but you really should send it into the Depot for repair.

I have yet to try CSS, A few of my friends are obsessed with it, but the last thing that I've been caught up in is UT2004, as a matter of fact my computer fried right after I beat the Tournament. So, my computer is in the same place, dreaming of its own brand of ownage.

Yeah the a/c adapter was the problem

UNFORTUNATELY
it was only ONE of the problems!!!!!!!!!!!

our optical drive has something wrong with it. Whenever we turn on the computer it is one of two scenarios:
1. The computer is not recognizing that there is any cd drive whatsoever (you open up my computer window and there is no optical drive listed)

2. The computer is showing an optical drive and will read a cd, then if you take that cd out and put in a different one the drive disappears out of the my computer window and will no longer read data off any cd.

sooooooooo we have done a bunch of stuff with tech support including formatting windows and nothing worked. They are sending me a new windows cd saying ours must be faulty.... By now I just want my money back i feel like I got a less than quality product and want it replaced, these things shouldn't happen witha brand new out of the box computer!!!!!
