A6Ja / X1600 Color banding problem

im having a really really strange problem with my asus A6Ja.(with a 256mb mobility radeon X1600.) The colors on the screen makes transistions between slight color changes, instead of smooth gradients. i can see this in both photos, graphics, when watching video files and when playing games.
This is really a big problem for me since i work as a photographer and need to be able to fine tune colors and lightness when working with my pictures.

I use the video card drivers on the disc that came with the computer. (these should be no more than like 2 months old)
One really strange thing, is that if i uninstall the drivers and reboot the computer, the colors show up as they should, but as soon as i (or windows) install the drivers, it looks just as if my screen is set to 16-bit color instead of 32-bit (but i have of course checked that it actually is set to 32-bits, however if i do switch down to 16-bits, i notice no difference in video quality).

Here is a photo of the screen when playing world of warcraft (on the highest color settings) where you hopefully can see what i'm talking about: http://saidkarlsson.com/colorproblem.jpg
But the same thing can be seen in everything, movies, windows, photos, graphics...

My guess is that this is driver specific, as not even ATI supports the mobility x1600 in their own drivers. Anyone else with this graphics chip that can tell me if you also have the banding?

I've tried the omega drivers aswell as running mobilemod with the latest official 6.2 drivers, but with the same result.

What can it be?
any help will be widely appreciated

I don't have a good image to test this with right now, but I think you are right. Still, I think this is a driver issue that will prolly be solved soon enough.

Dude.... Try putting the game setting on 32 bit color.. and the windows settings too. And i am sorry to say this but... This is normal on all laptop LCD's. They do not display all the colors a crt can display. There are some articles arround this forum that discus that problem.

all the settings are on 32-bit, but everything looks like it's 16-bit. And _without_ the drivers installed, the colors looks like they should, so it can't be that the display cant show them correctly either. Also, it looks the same when i connect my 20'' Apple cinema display to the computer...

I had the same probleme with my asus a6ja,
I flashed my bios with the new version "BIOS Ver.207AS".
After I flashed my bios the colour banding problem was solved togheter with other graphic card related problems (no screen at startup and random reboots). You can find the new bios in the download section on the asus website.

Thanks a lot!

Thank you very much, spikke! It fixed the issue for me too!

For some reason, I expected a brand new computer to have the latest bios and drivers as well, but...

New Bios even plays music!

I had the same problem.. and got it fixed the same way. Thank you guys! I am impressed by the fact that the new Bios has a little tune at boot up!
uh, isn't playing a tune at boot a bad thing? I thought that meant there was something wrong...
Ah, but this is a happy tune! Comes with the word "Asus" on the screen...
Yeah It is a happy tune. Not like a buzzer sound but rather like the windows log in jingle...

Ah, gocha. I've just never heard of a good BIOS jingle before. Enjoy!
