Just ordered SZ160P/C....

Well I just took the plunge ordering up the SZ160P/C.

I am worried I did not make the right decision. I have never seen this laptop in person - I bought it based on the fact it is small, duo core, and supposedly looks really cool.

I have gone from a Compel 15", to a Sony A190 17", to a Dell 8600, to a Dell 700m.

The latest notebook was recently stolen so I have a chance to get pretty much whatever I want but I need to do so in the next 2 weeks.

is the SZ160P/C the right choice for me? What would you guys get if money did not matter?

I want small and portable.
Powerful and fast - (worried this is only a 1.8 and my 700m was a 2.0)
Long battery life.
I love features.

Anyone with any suggestions? I am worried because so many users here have bought SZ's and seem to be complaining about all sorts of issues. Wifi signal, keyboard, screen, battery life, hard drive failues....

What gives?

If money was no object and keeping with your needs I think the SZ premium is a great choice.

Order the extended protection plan and you dont need to worry about any problems. Normally those extended plans are a waste of money. But when it comes to new Sony technology its worthwhile.

I've seen a few TX screens that have cracked. The SZ premium has a larger version of the thin TX screen. The accidental damage extended protection plan will cover any problems for years.

i am thinking of getting SZ160, but I want to wait for initial reviews, so I am really loking for forward to your thoughts

How long before they told you it would ship. I've ordered a custom sz140 on 1/27 and it still hasn't shipped. I might want to change my order to a preconfigured sz160 if there's a short ship time.

When I placed my order he said they had 60 on back order with 120 units coming in on the next shipment. They would have that shipment on the 28th. So I am hoping to get it the 1st week of March.

I am just so worried I will regret not waiting for the 2.0Ghz version. It seems to have everything else I wanted - finger print reader, bluetooth, camera, dvd burner, dvd burner.

I will probably buy memory and upgrade it to 2GB, add an exteded life battery and buy the docking station.

Hi there,

I too am waiting for reviews before I spend my hard earned cash.

Im stuck between the new TX2 and the SZ core duo 2ghz (EUR2500 is my budget).

Cant wait to hear your first impressions and review Jess!

Apparently some SZ owners arent pleased with the keyboard (flex issues)...

I have had a 160 on order from datavis.com for several weeks. They adv should be in any day and ship out the same day it arrives. I believe they have the best price on the 160 at 2388.00. I am also worried about being one of the first to test the unit. Hope it works out. I'll review it when it gets in.

SZ 160 shipped today will arrive 2/27

The SZ 160 order was placed on 1/24 and just got email confirmation that it was shipped today and should receive by 2/27 by fedex. Yeeppeee. Will post pictures when I receive it on Monday.

Trying to order the SZ 160 on SonyStyle gives a message of "The product VGNSZ160P/C is currently unavailable until Mar 22, 2006!"

I heard they were to be available by 2/28. But now it looks like Sony is pushing out the dates. It doesn't make sense that other retailers will get the laptop before SonyStyle. Anyone have more info on the SZ Premium line?

or maybe they sold out?
I was thinking that at first too. But why wouldn't they take orders and give a ship date in the future? Just like what they did with the pre-orders. It doesn't make sense to me why SonyStyle would turn customers away without taking orders unless they are delaying the release. Thoughts?

I called Sony in NYC today and asked about the SZ Premium availability. The guy said they don't have any yet and don't expect any for at least two and a half weeks - maybe longer. Since Sony doesn't have any to ship SonyStyle isn't taking any more orders. He also said he wasn't allowed to take an order over the phone for the SZ until they have them in stock.

I don't know if this guy is just feeding me BS or not. If someone who pre-ordered on SonyStyle gets their 160 please let us all know.

All this leads me to believe they aren't sold out, but they just don't have ANY to deliver the pre-orders so they arent taking more orders.

Well - looks like Sony gave me a bunch of lies. Today when I called to check my status they told me they have over 250 on back order and that they won't get to my order till March 22.

I need to buy something and I need to have it by March 22.

Anyone have any ideas? Looks like I will buy whatever comes 1st - the Asus W3J or the Sony SZ160.

Are there any other laptops that compete with these two?

Man, we are in the same boat. I think a lot of people are.

I have been shopping for months now and frankly I'm tired of waiting. The big store chains appear to have the SZ 110/ 120 in stock so I'm still considering that. The Acer 5672 and 8204 are intriguing but I'm seeing a lot of weird issues on the Acer forums. The Acer 5672 in particular is absolutely loaded and can be had for under $1,600.00 on Newegg.
The lappy that really has my eye is the HP dv1000t and if had any dedicated GPU (it has a GMA 950) I'd own it already. I can't understand why HP wouldn't offer at least an x200 with an option to go to at least and x300 or x600. They'd be selling them like hotcakes.
Dell's E1705 is a sweet machine and with coupons is a good deal. But its a beast and I don't know if I need or want a 17" lappy.
Love the W3J but I'm thinking we're not going to see those ship until the end of March at the earliest and I'm getting tired of waiting.

Let's face it, the Sony SZ has it all. Seems to me they are kind of surprised at the demand this thing has fostered. I think the whole industry will take notice and you'll see a lot more thought going into manufacturing 14.1 and under notebooks over the next year.

I agree - If both were available today I would probably go with the SZ160P/C. I have owned all sorts of notebooks - Compel 15", Sony A190 (17"), Dell 8600 (15.4") and a Dell 700M (12"). Of all those laptops I have to admit the 700M was the best by far.

I like to take my laptop with me and I like to sit in front of the TV to do work and to surf. The 12" was perfect for that. That is why I think the Sony SZ will be absolutly perfect. 13.3" screen and it will be lighter than my 700M was.

I rarely game and I am sure the video card in the SZ will be able to handle any kind of gaming I want to play. The W3J is probably a better value since it has a better video card, and a 2nd battery option.

If either were available right now I would buy them. But as it is I just hope I get the Sony SZ soon.

I keep flip flopping. After seeing the SZ120 this weekend at CompUSA - it did not seem any smaller or portable than any of the 14" widescreens.

That being said - I think I am now leaning toward the Asus W3J. The better video performance may add life to this laptop as it should be able to handle anything that comes out over the next couple of years.

I'm keeping my 140 on order. Looks like the W3J may slip into April. I figure if Sony continues to d*ck around and my order slips further, it gives me the opportunity to cancel and get the W3J or 160 if they become available in the meantime. Then if I get it I think you have 30 days unconditional return with Sony so by the time I've had a chance to make a full evaluation, the W3J should be out and first impressions in.

Nothing to lose really.

ok , i got mine sz110/b yesterday from US.

i was a very happy owner of tr2a.

main points:
1. the speed of the new laptop is awesome.
2. the keybord sucks greatly in terms of feel and size. why didn't they just use the size of the tr and it's feel.
3. the bio finger sensor is good

i am still testing the machine guys

more later,
hope it helps

Would be good to hear your thoughts later on. I think a lot of people who are considering the Sony SZ are also considering the Asus W3J (like me).

Keep us posted!
