Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB vs Travelstar 7K100 100GB

I'm upgrading my hard drive in my laptop, I was wondering if anyone had an opinion of which one of these drives is better?....

Both are 7200 RPM with 8Mb Cache, so can't see one performing quicker than the other. However the Seagate comes with a 5 year warranty over the Hitachi.

Cheers,
Cinders.

Seagate is always going to have the better name...of course, now with acquiring Maxtor...that might not be true over the long haul. I'd go with the Seagate over the Hitachi.

well the power usage of the 7k100 is lower than the seagate that is about the only thing that I know of that differentiates them

7K100 is faster in real world benchmarks, while the Seagate is faster in some synthetics. With acoustic management enabled, the 7K100 is whisper quiet, not sure how they compare that way. 7K100 is also cheaper, so better performance-value ratio as well... I think it's really no contest, get the 7K100 or hold out for perpendicular drives. Seagate already has a 5400 160GB perpendicular drive but its very expensive, like $450-500.

Thanks guys, I've just ordered the 7K100

I may have to agree with waiting on perpendicular recording drives. I want to add a 2nd HD purely for storage purposes and with there already being a 160gig drive out now... I would guess to see 200gig drives by the end of 2006. And as the conversion of manufacturing shifts more to perpendicular, the price will drop significantly.

Plus, from benchmarks and reviews, the 5400rpm Perpendicular Drive operates as speeds similar to 7200rpm drives, and with only the power usage of a 4200rpm drive. So that's a Win-Win-Win for storage technology.

The Seagate has significantly lower noise levels than the Hitachi. Unless you put your ear to the case, you will not hear the Seagate operating under any circumstances; which can actually feel a bit disconcerting, because you can't hear the hard drive thrashing. With the Seagate, you need to look at the drive activity light to figure out whether there is drive activity.

I was not impressed with the upgrade from the 5400 fujistu to the 7k100. I did a fresh format on the 5400hd and when I was done and got rid of all of dells crap it was alot faster doing everything.Maybe it was a bad install on dells part. But when I swapped the 5400 with the 7200 2 days later I noticed a change not worth the cash.
Just my
2cents.

Are these perpendicular drives out now? I'm looking to upgrade my HD soon as well.

The first thing I do when I receive a Dell computer is reformat reinstall.

Well they've just contacted me to say they haven't got the Hitachi in stock. They'll do me the Seagate for the same price so I'm going for that one. A 5 year warranty sounds promising!...

I'll wait for a perpendicular drive to go in my D600 which I use a lot for travelling, sounds ideal for it. I have a 100Gb Seagate it in at the moment so should be a while before I need to upgrade it and hopefully there will be a 200Gb perpendicular out by then...

The Hitachi 7k100 is faster and Hitachi is a top brand for quality in hard drives. It has the standard 3 year warranty which is longer then most of us will worry about keeping the drive running. I havn't decided if i'm going to upgrade to the 7k100 yet or not though cause i'm still looking for a good place to get the SATA version for cheaper then what i've found.

The Hitachi is just faster by a whisker, you'd never notice the difference...

Both are excellent drives, I just opted for the cheaper drive with the longer warranty, it made sense to me...

The i9300 doesn't support SATA, it's PATA...!?!....

the latest revision of the 9300 does have SATA in it

Really?... Darn my old version i9300, I'd much prefer a SATA drive.

According to those tests the 7k100 did slightly better then the 7200.1 in the idle noise department although they said it has the slightest hint of a high-pitched whine which they also said takes quite a bit of concentration to notice.

In the single user performance tests the 7k100 outperformed the 7200.1 from Seagate. In the multi user server tests the Seagate seemed to do quite a bit better.

Idle noise is pretty much irrelevant in both cases, since it's just about imperceptible, unless you are sitting in a sound-proof chamber. It's operating noise where the Seagate shines. I have both of these drives (in two different laptops), and the difference between them is very significant. On the other hand, even the Hitachi isn't exactly noisy, so I don't think this should be a deal-breaker for most people. Also, in my experience, the Hitachi does seem to be just a tiny bit faster than the Seagate (just subjective impression, not a benchmark result), but again the difference is so small that it shouldn't matter much.

P.S.: Notice they measure idle noise from a distance of three millimeters (about 1/10 of an inch) from the hard drive...
