Can anyone give a comparison between these two? Particularly in regards to customer service and build quality of notebooks.

The reason I ask is:

Rock Xtreme CT £1925.83 (inc vat and carriage)
Intel Pentium M 780 (2.26GHz)
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
1GB DDR2 533MHz RAM (upgrade to 2x 1GB for +£125)
100GB (7200rpm) HDD
17” WUXGA+ X-Glass TFT Screen 1900 x 1200 Res (or 17" WSGA+ 1680 x 1050 option for -£100)
PCI Express 256MB nVidia Geforce Go 7800 GTX (or ATI X800XT PE for +£0)
8 x DVD Dual Layer (+/-) Writer
Intel® Pro 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN
7.1 Surround Sound Output
Bluetooth
4-in-1 Card Reader
Webcam with digital zoom
1 x Firewire / 4 x USB 2.0
Carry Case
3yr Collect & Return Warranty

Dell XPS M170 £2327 (inc vat and carriage)
Intel Pentium M 780 (2.26GHz)
Microsoft® Windows® Media Center (or XP Home for +£0)
1GB DDR2 533MHz RAM (upgrade to 2x 1GB for +£280)
100GB (7200rpm) HDD
17” WUXGA+ Truelife Screen 1900 x 1200 Res
PCI Express 256MB nVidia Geforce Go 7800 GTX
8 x DVD Dual Layer (+/-) Writer
Intel® ProWireless 2200 802.11b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card
Bluetooth
SD Card Reader
1 x Firewire / 6 x USB 2.0
3yr International On-site Warranty

For the cash Dell want, Rock can offer AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ with 7800GTX, 2 x 100GB 7200 HDD in either Raid 0 or Raid 1 config

I've written a side by side review here:

http://www.rockforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2603

For customer service I would say Rock are better - althoguh Mobile-Support is far from flawless, if you're having trouble they also have a forum which you can speak to someone higher up if you're having problems that aren't being resolved.

On the downside, the Rock warranty is collect and return which can be problematic for picking up and collecting as obviously you are at the courier's mercy so in theory the onsite warranty of the Dell would be better there. However, at best I would say Dell's support is 'random', sometimes I'll get a helpful person at technical support but other times it cam be a long and frustrating 'debate' on the phone with someone who has trouble understanding my accent and I have trouble understanding their Indian accent if it's a stronger one.

Personally I preferred the build quality of the XPS M170 - the XtremeCT is a solid machine but its cooling system is less robust as it relies on a larger fan on the underside. The XPS on the other hand uses two cooling fans at each back corner of the notebook which seem to draw air from above and the side and vent it out the back, this system is quieter and can cope better when the laptop is not on a solid surface.

The XPS is a also a little spartan on details, the memory card reader is SD only (not even MMC), no webcam, no mic etc. plus as you've said there is a hefty premium.

Many thanks, John - great review.

When I got my XPS 2 there was no other option with the 6800 Ultra due to the Dell/nVidia deal, now it looks like I'll have a genuine choice for my next notebook.

I've owned this for almost 9 months and not had a single problem (touches wood). I'm not much of a techie and really like how easy it is to swap out ram and optical drive.

I'm off to join the rock forum, it looks as informative as this excellent resource.

Thanks again for the heads up.
