Booting Windows or Linux from Microdrive

Thread Starter
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience booting Windows XP Pro from a Microdrive using the 6-in-1 card reader. I'm particularly interested in experiences with the 8890 although I'm guessing this is a generic capability. If so, what is the smallest size of Microdrive that can be used to boot Windows XP Pro? I'm interested in smaller because it is cheaper. I would have an actual hard drive with my Windows applications and data on them. Also, is there any experience with booting Windows from a Microdrive and running applications that are located on an actual hard drive? If so, does booting from the Microdrive affect the runtime performance of applications that are located on an actual regular hard drive?

I'm interested in this because I am getting an 8890 that will have Raid 0 set up on the hard drive for the Primary Hard Drive and the Secondary Modular Bay Hard Drive. I am primarily a Linux user and will have Linux boot off of the Raid 0 array. I want all of my Raid 0 array dedicated to Linux. Since I can't boot off of a hard drive in the TV Tuner Bay, I'm looking at using a Microdrive to boot Windows XP and have my Windows applications and data on a 3rd hard drive in the TV Tuner Bay.

I'm also interested in the idea of booting Linux from a Microdrive. If it did not affect the performance of my applications, perhaps I would boot all my operating systems from a microdrive. Or maybe this would be a good way to experiment with a new Linux distribution. Anyway, the options for boot devices seem to get pretty limited for the 8890 if you are using Raid 0 and don't want to boot off of your Raid array. However, I expect I will boot Linux off of my Raid array although if I had a good alternative that did not affect performance, I would definitely consider it.

Unfortunately, Dave, as with all other boot-related things (like booting off a USB drive), everything depends on the BIOS. If the BIOS can support booting off the card reader, then it would be possible (the OS would probably have to have support for the filesystem type of the card) but until then, we are all S-Out-of-Luck. I know, it would be sweet for me to boot off my 160gig WD Caviar in an external enclosure.

Just an idea: While the above is related to "standard" booting, is it possible to preload a small bit of software to detect the card reader and boot some OS off of it?

like an initrd image with grub or lilo calling the others. Hmmmm As for XP on a microdrive I don't it has enough space for that hog. Give it a try and see what happens. Worst case is it's a miserable failure and you have to reinstall. With a new system that's not a real big issue.

In www.mini-itx.com, there was someone that set up to boot off a LAN. You might want to take a look at that for ideas, problems.

I couldn't find the article but there were a slew of hits on Vivisimo.
