Should I do a clean install?

OK, well I have to admit that the pre-installation of the OS on my Acer 5672 is pretty clean. I've seen other laptops such as Toshiba, that have all kinds of garbage on their "fresh" OS installation.

Nevertheless, I am thinking of formatting all partitions (including the Acer restore partition, which I will compensate for by burning a recovery DVD); making two partitions and putting Windows XP Pro (retail, which I have from my desktop purchase) on one, and Kubuntu on the other.

Any objections to that? Anything I should know before I do that? Should I not do that at all? Comments and suggestions please.

I'ts your laptop, go for it. Technically, though, its not legal to install the same copy of windows on 2 computers.

If your Acer came with XP Pro, you have a Pro license and are golden. If the Acer has XP Home or MCE the key won't work.

Linux (Fedora probably) will replace XP Pro on my desktop. Laptop came with XP Home, but I'll put XP Pro on it, and Kubuntu (heard it's good for mobile).

In terms of system stability, any issues? Are the OS's included with laptops proprietary? Is the retail copy of Windows optimized for desktops and not laptops?

he said he is going to use this disc that came with his dekstop though, so im assuming he allready has it installed on that.

The disc that came with your desktop may be a propriatory(sp?) restore disk that only works on your desktop. No guarentee it'll work on your lappy.

You should reformat at least once every 2 months.

What do you do with your machine? You shouldn't need to wipe/fresh install that often.

Stop browsing pron sites with spy/adware

As for OP, just download all drivers and software needed onto a CD-R. Makes install alot quicker. Saves downloading anti-virus and browsing before having protection.

I would create a XP2 slipstream disc. Saves installing SP2 after the first boot.

My motto is, if you find yourself needing to ask ...then the answer is "yes".

Guys guys guys, com'n, pay attention to the post you are replying to.

While I didn't say that my desktop is custom-built, I did mention the fact that the XP Pro on it, is retail. So let's leave the legal system out of this.

I talked to Acer tech, and they said that they won't be able to troubleshoot if I have any problems with the recovery partition, even if I burn the recovery CD. Nevertheless I am going ahead with my original plan.

ElecEagle, on any other occasion, I would curse your motto, but this one is an exception.

I don't think the clean install is necessary. You can use Partition Magic to wipe and merge the other partitions into C:\ even without doing any formatting.

No need to waste all that time getting all those little things working later.

Good luck with Kubuntu too, let us know how that works out!
